Bhubaneswar based tech-startup Serendipity Space could soon become the first Indian company to offer Low Earth Orbit (LEO)-based manufacturing services to pharmaceutical companies.

Commercial processing of pharmaceutical substances in microgravity is an emerging field globally, with Merck’s success in leveraging zero gravity conditions to accelerate the research and development of Keytruda, its global blockbuster cancer drug, being the most cited examples.

Recently, Serendipity successfully operated and recovered its orbital-class satellite prototype after a milestone near-space mission, marking a major step toward commercial microgravity manufacturing, Antariksh Parichha, co-founder and CEO of the company said.

The vehicle tested core technologies for the company’s future orbital fleet, including advanced heat shield systems, avionics, and its autonomous pharmaceutical factory, “Alchemy”, he said.

“The system operated continuously in harsh space conditions, successfully executing drug crystallization processes and preserving crystal integrity through a controlled return, touchdown and recovery. The mission carried commercial monoclonal antibody therapeutics and small molecules, each underpinning multi-billion-dollar markets; alongside additional proteins for drug discovery”, Parichha said.

The launch was conducted using a stratospheric balloon launch platform leveraging the decades long expertise of scientists at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Balloon Facility, Hyderabad.

Serendipity’s effort to build satellites that can autonomously manufacture pharmaceuticals in space (microgravity) and bring them back to Earth targets a critical bottleneck in drug development. On Earth, gravity disrupts crystallization, leading to defects that reduce drug solubility, stability, and effectiveness. In microgravity, these constraints disappear, enabling the formation of superior crystal structures without altering the underlying chemistry of the drug. “This has direct implications for both small molecule and protein therapeutics. Many existing drugs suffer from poor bioavailability due to suboptimal crystal forms. In parallel, protein-based therapies like monoclonal antibodies often require long IV infusions because high-concentration formulations become unstable while being made under gravity. Microgravity can enable uniform, stable formulations that could shift these treatments to simple at-home injections”, Parichha explains.

The company was co-founded by Antariksh Parichha, Jivitesh Debata and Monica Ekal, combining their expertise in physics, engineering and space operations. Following its pre-seed round in July 2025, the company assembled a small technical team of domain experts by October, bringing together pharmaceutical scientists and aerospace engineers under one roof, a rare integration that defines its approach. In under five months, the team designed and built a fully functional satellite prototype, completed a rigorous month-long test campaign, and successfully executed a near-space mission in 2026.

Parichha said this swift timeline underscores the company’s ability to translate capital into execution at exceptional speed, setting a new benchmark for rapid innovation in space-based pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The company is now positioning itself to scale fully towards conducting orbital manufacturing and return to Earth, opening up a new frontier in drug development and delivery.
