Anthropic has introduced India-specific pricing for its Claude AI chatbot, allowing users to pay for subscriptions in rupees instead of U.S. dollars. The change removes the need for international card payments and marks a broader push by the OpenAI rival to strengthen its foothold in one of its fastest-growing markets. India now accounts for 5.8% of Claude's global usage, making it Anthropic's second-largest market after the U.S.

The new pricing is being rolled out across Claude's web and mobile applications. A Claude Pro subscription now costs ₹1,999 per month if billed annually, or ₹2,399 if billed monthly. The Pro plan consists of access to the Sonnet 5 model by default, along with Opus and five times the usage limits of the free tier, along with limited access to the latest Fable 5 model.

While Claude Max is available in two tiers — the 5x plan is priced at ₹12,000 and the 20x plan at ₹24,000. Anthropic has also introduced local pricing for its collaborative Claude Team plan at ₹2,300 per user per month, if billed annually or ₹3000 if billed monthly, with a minimum of five seats. Team Premium is about ₹12,000 annually, or Rs 15,000 monthly. Anthropic has not rolled out payments using UPI as an option, which means one would have to use net banking or cards to complete transactions. OpenAI rolled out India pricing while offering UPI support at the same time last year.

The company has simultaneously extended promotional access to Claude Fable 5 for paid subscribers until July 19.

How Claude stacks up against ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok

Claude enters an increasingly crowded premium AI market where most major providers now offer India-specific pricing. At ₹1,999 per month, Claude Pro is priced on par with ChatGPT Plus, while its ₹9,999 Claude Max (5x) tier undercuts OpenAI's India-specific ChatGPT Pro, which costs ₹10,699 a month. Google, meanwhile, has built a broader subscription ladder, offering Google AI Plus at ₹399 per month, Google AI Pro at ₹1,950, and Google AI Ultra starting at ₹6,500 for the 5x usage tier, increasing to ₹19,500 for the highest tier. OpenAI also offers ChatGPT Go at ₹399 a month, while xAI's SuperGrok continues to be billed in U.S. dollars—about $30 a month, or roughly ₹2,500-2,700 before taxes and currency conversion.
