Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced at the 48th annual general meeting on Friday that the oil-to-telecom conglomerate has formed Reliance Intelligence, a wholly owned subsidiary focused on AI.

“Artificial intelligence is at the heart of Reliance’s transformation into a deep-tech enterprise. To bring even more focus and speed to this agenda, it is my pleasure to announce the formation of a wholly-owned subsidiary called Reliance Intelligence,” Ambani said.

According to Ambani, Reliance Intelligence has been conceived with four missions. The first is to house India’s next-generation AI infrastructure. “Reliance Intelligence will build gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centres, powered by green energy and engineered for training and inference on a national scale,” Ambani said, adding that work has already begun on the gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centres. The facilities will be delivered in phases, aligned to “India’s growing needs, powered by Reliance’s new energy ecosystem, and purpose-built for AI training and inference.

Its second mission is to house global partnerships. Reliance Intelligence will bring the world’s storied tech companies and open-source communities together with Reliance’s “deep-domain expertise and execution strength to deliver performance, leadership, resilient supply, and India-first compliance for AI,” Ambani explained.

The third mission is to build AI services for India. The company will deliver “trusted, easy-to-use AI services” for consumers, small businesses, and enterprises, along with solutions of “national importance” such as education, healthcare, and agriculture. “(These solutions) will be reliable for scale and affordable to every Indian,” Ambani said.

Lastly, Reliance Intelligence’s fourth founding mission is to house the talent for AI. The company will create a home for world-class researchers, engineers, designers and product builders. “(This will combine) the speed of research and the rigour of engineering, so that ideas become innovations and applications providing solutions to India and the world,” said Ambani.

Artificial intelligence was a dominant theme at Reliance Industries’ 48th AGM, with Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, unveiling JioFrames, a smart glass that is powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Ambani said that JioFrames would be an AI-powered wearable platform, that is ‘made for India.’ According to Ambani, the smart glass features support for multiple Indian languages, enabling users to speak directly to Jio’s AI voice assistant.

Akash Ambani also announced Riya, an AI-powered voice assistant that will enable users to navigate content on the streaming service. Jio also launched VoicePrint, a voice cloning and lip-sync technology powered by AI, through which consumers can stream content on the platform in various Indian languages.

Reliance is also deepening its existing partnership with Google and has announced a new, India-focused AI joint venture with Meta.
