About

Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, is relentless in his mission to develop large-scale AI infrastructure and services, aiming to add an intelligence layer to Jio’s offerings. “We are working on enabling large-scale AI infrastructure and services,” Akash said after the Q4FY25 results. Under his leadership, Jio has built a customer base of 488 million in just eight years, emerging as India’s largest telecom player. He played a crucial role in launching India’s first free voice telecom service in 2016, establishing Jio as the country’s largest 4G network provider. Following the deployment of its 5G network across the country, Akash is now focused on developing innovative products and services that utilise 5G, AI, blockchain, and the Internet of Things. These advancements aim to transform commerce, education, and healthcare delivery. In FY25, Jio reported gross revenues of ₹1.5 lakh crore and a net profit of ₹26,120 crore. Profit rose 21.9% year-on-year, driven by increased tariffs for mobility services, the scale-up of home broadband connections, and growth in digital services. Akash has also been spearheading talks with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s broadband internet services to India. Both companies are exploring broader collaboration opportunities to leverage each other's infrastructure. Since taking over as chairman, Akash has overseen substantial investments—including nearly half of the airwaves sold in the ₹88,078 crore auction and ₹1.3 lakh crore for building Jio’s 5G network. Beyond Jio, Akash is also a director on the board of Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd. An avid sports enthusiast, he is actively involved in the management of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.
