Maruti Suzuki has said that it will also install EV charging points across 100 cities for electric vehicles.
Maruti Suzuki today unveiled its eVITARA, the company's first battery electric vehicle, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. The company, however, has not yet announced the launch date or expected pricing of its first BEV.
The eVITARA is an SUV built on HEARTECT-e, a platform exclusively designed for electric vehicles. It comes with two battery pack options—49kWh and 61kWh—with a claimed range of 500 km on a single charge.
Additionally, the company plans to install EV charging points across 100 cities in its first phase to enable faster adoption of BEVs.
“The idea is that within the first 100 cities, every 5 to 10 kilometers, a customer finds a charging point by Maruti Suzuki… We are preparing over 1,500 EV-enabled service workshops covering over 1,000 cities. These workshops will have specially trained manpower and special equipment to provide all EV-related support, including charging,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India, during the car launch.
“We aim to make BEVs attractive to customers through a three-step strategy—develop a BEV-dedicated platform for optimum performance, evolve the right product for the target markets, and leverage our global economies of scale by concentrating manufacturing at a single location for the world,” said Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director & President, Suzuki Motor Corporation, at the Maruti launch on the sidelines of Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
“For this purpose, we have chosen India as the global manufacturing base due to its quality products and scale merit,” Toshihiro added.
The company plans to begin production of the eVITARA in the coming months at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant and export it to “more than 100 countries, including Europe and Japan.”
“We have invested more than two thousand one hundred crore rupees in manufacturing the eVITARA in India, which includes a dedicated EV production line,” Takeuchi added.
The company is also planning to launch a dedicated mobile app to simplify the EV charging journey for customers. Using the app, customers will be able to locate nearby charging stations, get real-time slot availability, charge their vehicles, and make payments seamlessly.
The eVITARA is expected to be showcased in a phased manner across NEXA dealerships nationwide, the company stated in its press release.
On January 16, Fortune India reported that the company is planning to reclaim a 50% share of the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki currently holds a 40% share of India’s passenger vehicle market.
“Our first priority is to achieve the top market share in SUVs… We are committed to actively introducing new models with a particular emphasis on SUVs,” Toshihiro said in a roundtable yesterday.
