'You need to constantly keep setting goalposts and achieve them'

When RPSG Vice-Chairman Shashwat Goenka joined his father's business in 2013 he was asked to save the group's retail business from sinking. His biggest learning was to do things one at a time rather than carpet bombing. "You need to constantly keep setting goalposts and achieve them, that's an ongoing process," he says.

He first shut down the unviable stores and then focused on non-food categories for better margins. The strategy paid off. The per sq. ft. revenue of Spencer's Retail is more than double of what it was a decade ago. Goenka firmly believes in after-work unwinding as that charges him for the next day. Goenka's way of unwinding is to spend time with his daughter and cook. "Cooking is a great stress buster," he says.
