Dr M K Muneer, the Doctor of Harmony in Kerala

When it is tough to leave your mark in one domain itself, there are some who wear many hats and leaves positive vibes in those dimensions with their ability and humility.

Dr MK Muneer is an award winning author, social entrepreneur, singer, doctor, a former minister and leader from God’s own country.

He was awarded the best minister in the nation thrice for the category of Social Welfare and Panchayat for his implementation of projects that created long lasting effects in the grass roots. Having won the Indo – British award for the best minister, he represents the Kozhikode South constituency where people from all political spectrum, constituencies can approach him without any bias of any hue.

When asked about his achievements, he attributes his success to the people of the constituency that too beyond partisanship and to his humility through which he emerged as a consensus maker in harmonising various sections of the society.

Dr Muneer is well respected and accepted through out Kerala for his strong secular credentials and pluralistic outlook. He is one of the most sought after guest of honour for various faiths and community organisations.

His development initiatives in the city of Kozhikode and his dynamism when he was the minister endeared him to all segments of polity. A staunch proponent of progressive values and inclusive development, Muneer’s mega push for infrastructure development of the city ran into billions of government investment and intervention for the growth of Kozhikode.

Dr Muneer’s philosophy is a blend and balance of growth and care. His direct benefit scheme (DBT) of sending money to the widows, orphans, people without family, elderly and farmers became a case study for governance and was inspirational to many such projects across the land.

It was under his stewardship that Kerala created history with India’s First Transgender Policy. The ‘State Policy for Transgenders in Kerala’ created ripples across India with activist groups demanding a Kerala Model Policy in many states of India. Along with focusing on infrastructure Dr Munner focused on Human infrastructure, mental health, women empowerment, protection of child rights, and assistance to the mentally challenged.

The pioneering work in this as a Doctor and Minister earned laurels from National Media too. Under his leadership ‘NISH’ (National institute of Speech and Hearing) was elevated as a university.

Bringing his expertise from the medical field, the Doctor Minister also took initiatives for ‘psycho social counselling’ for the adolescent and teenagers in schools.

Dr Munner has pioneered projects like ‘Snehapoorvam, snehasparsham, samashwasam, ashwasakiranam, renovation of public library, upgradation of Kozhikode beach to global standards, Melody for educational and cultural rejuvenation’.

Bringing his expertise from the world of medicine, his resourcefulness was epitomised by large scale conducting of medical camps for the needy, transformation of public health centres into model health centres and raising up the standard of Kottaparambathu Government hospital into global scale.

Addressing the geriatric issues in the state, the project of ‘Saphalame Vardhakyam’ for happiness and fulfilment of the elderly won laurels from across the nation. He has also envisioned Kozhikode to be a ‘fully wifi’ equipped place and the completion is on pipeline.

Owing to the huge popularity of more than a dozen new projects of Muneer, the governments even when they changed decided to continued with them.

He represents IUML (Indian Union Muslim League), an organisation led by Panakkad Thangal family who is well accepted across all communities of Kerala and are a bulwark against sectarian tendencies. When the occasion calls upon, they have considered it a duty to renounce their own interests for the larger sake of society to uphold the interests of the nation.

Dr Muneer has won many accolades for his literary endeavors. He was won SK Pottekkatt literary award for his work ‘Sree Narayana Guru Moonnu Vicharangal’ and C Achuta Menon Award for literature. This eminent doctor author from Kozhikode has emerged as one of the most noted leaders in the nation that has inspired people across the spectrum.
