As Covid-19 cases begin to climb once again, the Union Health Ministry has launched a coordinated response to assess public health preparedness across the country. In a series of high-level meetings held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), central and state health officials reviewed the current Covid-19 situation and devised a strategy to prevent escalation, according to official sources.
As of June 4, India has recorded 4,302 active cases—an increase of 864 in just 24 hours. According to official sources, the majority of these cases are mild and can be managed through home isolation. However, since January 1 this year, the country has reported 44 Covid 19-related deaths, primarily among patients with pre-existing medical conditions.
In response, the Health Ministry has instructed states and union territories to reinforce healthcare infrastructure, official sources aware of the developments told Fortune India. This includes ensuring the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. A nationwide mock drill to evaluate oxygen supply systems—including PSA plants, LMO tanks, and MGPS lines—was conducted on June 2. Further facility-level preparedness drills are scheduled for June 4 and 5.
The surveillance system is also on high alert. State and district units under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) are actively monitoring cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). The ministry has mandated that all hospitalised SARI cases and 5% of ILI cases undergo testing. Additionally, positive samples are being sent for whole genome sequencing through the ICMR Virus Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) network to detect any emerging variants.
Citizens have been advised to maintain hand hygiene, follow cough etiquette, and avoid crowded spaces if feeling unwell. Individuals with acute respiratory symptoms are urged to self-monitor and seek timely medical attention if symptoms escalate.
The ministry reiterated that all Covid 19-related updates should be sourced from official government channels such as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Press Information Bureau (PIB), urging the public to avoid misinformation.
With its latest review, the Union Health Ministry aims to pre-empt any large-scale outbreak and maintain public confidence through swift action and transparent communication.
