Meta has unveiled Meta Business Agent for WhatsApp, an artificial intelligence powered assistant designed to help businesses automate customer interactions, as the company doubles down on India's fast growing conversational commerce market.

Announced at the third edition of Meta's annual Business Summit in Mumbai, the new AI capability is aimed at enabling businesses to engage with customers around the clock, answer queries, recommend products, book appointments and qualify leads, while allowing human agents to step in whenever required. The company said the tool is built to help businesses deliver personalised customer experiences at scale without requiring large customer support teams.

The launch comes as messaging increasingly becomes the primary way consumers interact with brands in India, making the country one of Meta's most important markets for business messaging.

"India has emerged as one of the most dynamic markets for conversational business globally, with messaging becoming the preferred way for people and businesses to connect. As AI becomes more central to the transformation of the way businesses operate, Meta Business Agent represents the next step in that journey, helping businesses harness AI to strengthen customer relationships, improve efficiency, and unlock growth," said Arun Srinivas, managing director and country head, Meta India.

Meta said the Business Agent is capable of handling customer interactions from start to finish. It can answer business specific questions, recommend products from a company's catalogue, schedule appointments, qualify incoming leads and support businesses in closing sales. Business owners can also choose when customer conversations should be transferred from the AI agent to a human representative.

Beyond customer service, the AI assistant is also designed to support business owners by analysing conversations, surfacing operational insights and providing summaries of missed customer interactions. Meta said this would help businesses stay on top of day to day operations while allowing teams to focus on growth.

Alongside, Meta also introduced the Meta Business Agent Platform for large enterprises that require greater control and customisation.

The platform enables enterprises to build and deploy their own AI powered business agents while integrating them with existing business systems such as Shopify, Zendesk and Shopee. Working alongside the WhatsApp Business Platform, it offers enterprise grade scalability, controls and measurement capabilities.

For enterprises, the platform is intended to fit into existing workflows rather than replace them, allowing AI agents to work alongside customer support teams and business systems.

With the introduction of Meta Business Agent and its enterprise platform, Meta is positioning WhatsApp to go beyond a mere a messaging app, and become a commerce platform.
