As India steps up its climate ambitions, state-run power giant NTPC has signed a landmark agreement with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), an international organisation aligned with the United Nations, to develop a comprehensive energy transition roadmap.
The move is part of India’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 and signals a significant pivot by one of the country’s most coal-dependent companies towards cleaner, greener alternatives. NTPC, which contributes nearly 25% of India’s total electricity production, will collaborate with SEforALL to model short-, medium- and long-term energy scenarios, investment needs, diversification opportunities, and socio-economic impacts of transitioning to a low-carbon future.
“Our aim is to foster responsible, sustainable economic development through an energy strategy that champions energy security, social inclusiveness, environmental stewardship, and growth powered by data, technology, and innovation,” said Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC. “This agreement positions us to meet the rising demand from communities and industry while keeping us at the leading edge of the energy transition.”
Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and UN Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All, hailed the agreement as a benchmark for emerging economies. “India continues to show climate leadership on the global stage by moving beyond commitment to concrete actions,” she said. “We are excited to support NTPC in co-creating a net-zero roadmap for the energy giant of India.”
Founded in 1975, NTPC has been the backbone of India’s industrialisation, with a current installed capacity exceeding 80 GW and another 32 GW under construction. In 2021, it became the first major Indian utility to pledge to a UN Energy Compact, aiming to achieve 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.
On the ground, NTPC is already advancing clean energy solutions—from floating solar plants and battery storage systems to carbon capture, green hydrogen, and pumped hydro storage. The partnership with SEforALL is expected to accelerate these initiatives through a globally informed, locally tailored strategy.
The roadmap will serve as a model not just for Indian utilities, but for energy companies across the Global South navigating the dual pressures of economic development and climate responsibility.
