India’s organised retail sector is entering an aggressive phase, and the signs show not just a sales ramp-up but also the sheer speed at which the country’s largest retail giants are adding stores.

From the conglomerate side, Reliance Retail, Tata’s Trent and Aditya Birla’s fashion and lifestyle businesses together added 3,891 stores in the last three financial years, taking their combined network to 26,067 outlets across the country. The expansion underscores a fundamental shift in Indian retail - organised players are no longer merely building a presence in metros but are aggressively penetrating smaller cities and towns and other emerging consumption markets.

Reliance Retail accounts for more than half of the combined footprint, adding 2,120 stores from March 2023 to March 2026. Trent added 696 stores, while Aditya Birla’s two demerged retail entities together added 1,075 stores. The numbers point to an intensifying battle for physical presence even as online commerce expands rapidly.

Scale takes Reliance deeper into India’s consumption map

Reliance remains in a league of its own. Its retail arm ended FY26 with 20,160 stores covering 78.3 million sq. ft., after opening 1,564 stores in a single year. In March 2023, its network stood at 18,040 stores. With revenue of ₹3.7 lakh crore and profit of ₹13,842 crore in FY26, Reliance is pursuing a scale-and-density strategy across grocery, fashion and lifestyle, consumer electronics and digital commerce.

Smart Bazaar alone crossed 1,000 stores, while more than 3,100 fulfilment points strengthen its hyperlocal delivery network. The message is clear: Reliance wants to be wherever the Indian consumer shops.

Trent, however, is demonstrating aggressive expansion, though it does not necessarily match Reliance’s scale. Its network has grown from 590 stores in March 2023 to 1,286 stores, including six in the UAE, spanning 321 cities and more than 17.7 million sq. ft. Its FY26 revenue from operations rose 18.2% to ₹19,701 crore, while profit increased to ₹1,967.82 crore from ₹1,584.84 crore.

The main engine for Trent is Zudio. The value-fashion chain ended FY26 with 963 stores, adding 212 outlets during the year. Westside had 300 stores and Star Supermarket had 84.

Trent Managing Director P. Venkatesalu described the strategy as disciplined expansion—deepening presence in existing micro-markets while entering new cities and towns. A stronger operating backbone, quicker turnaround and faster product refreshes are allowing Trent to scale without sacrificing store productivity.

Zudio, ethnic wear and premium brands drive the next leg

Aditya Birla, meanwhile, is using its store network to build a broader fashion and lifestyle portfolio following the demerger of its retail businesses into Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) and Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands (ABLBL).

ABFRL ended FY26 with 1,273 stores across 7.9 million sq. ft. It posted revenue of ₹8,177 crore and a loss of ₹830 crore. Its ethnic business was the standout performer, growing 14% to ₹2,227 crore, with more than 680 stores and over 80 additions during the year. OWND, its value-fashion format, reached 79 stores after adding 34 in FY26.

ABLBL, which houses brands such as Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly, Peter England, Reebok and American Eagle, had 3,348 stores across nearly 4.9 million sq. ft. and reported FY26 revenue of ₹8,396 crore and profit of ₹171 crore.

Together, the two entities now have 4,621 stores, compared with 3,546 branded stores in March 2023.

The significance of this expansion goes beyond store counts. Reliance is pursuing nationwide retail dominance through scale and an integrated ecosystem; Trent is turning value fashion into a high-velocity store-opening machine; and Aditya Birla is using multiple brands and categories to occupy higher-value consumer segments.

For India’s organised retail market, the competitive battlefield is therefore shifting from who has the biggest brand to who can build the strongest physical footprint - and make every new store profitable. The 3,891-store addition in three years could be an early marker of a much larger retail expansion still to come.
