PM Modi, Trump discuss trade, defence, energy, critical tech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Wednesday, reviewing bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy and critical technologies as the two countries seek to deepen their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
A statement from the PMO office said that the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, a framework established during Trump's 2020 visit to India.
“They agreed to maintain close engagement to deepen cooperation for the benefit of the people of both countries,” the statement said.
PM Modi and President Trump also exchanged views on regional and international developments and discussed ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security. The two leaders agreed to remain in touch, the statement said.
Trade, energy remain key areas
The conversation comes as India and the US continue to engage on bilateral trade and broader economic ties. Trade was among the key areas reviewed during Wednesday's conversation, although the official statement did not provide details of any specific trade agreement, tariff decision or breakthrough.
Energy and critical technologies were also part of the discussion, alongside defence and other areas of mutual interest.
The latest conversation also comes against the backdrop of continued geopolitical and economic uncertainty, with the two leaders discussing regional and international developments as well as efforts to promote global peace and security.
Last met in June
The two leaders last met in person on June 17, 2026, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. During that meeting, PM Modi and President Trump discussed bilateral trade, defence, energy and strategic technologies, while also reviewing progress in negotiations towards an interim bilateral trade agreement.
Wednesday's conversation was the latest high-level engagement between New Delhi and Washington as both sides work to advance cooperation across trade, technology, defence and energy.
