Coal production grew by 7.28% to reach an all-time high of 1,039.59 MT (million tonnes) in 2024, compared to 969.07 MT, according to data released by the Ministry of Coal today.

Coal dispatch across the nation also hit the highest, surging by 6.56% to 1,012.72 MT, up from 950.39 MT in 2023. “This consistent growth in both production and dispatch underscores the sector’s commitment to ensuring timely availability of coal for power generation and other industries, further bolstering national energy security.”

The ministry’s goal is to reduce dependence on coal imports, making the nation self-sufficient while contributing towards long-term sustainable growth.

Recently, the coal ministry announced that the combined coal production from captive and commercial mines between April 1 and December 31, 2024, increased by 34.20%, reaching 131.05 MT, compared to 97.665 MT in the corresponding period last year.

The ministry highlighted that the highest-ever monthly coal production from captive and commercial mines was witnessed in December 2024, with 18.40 MT of coal produced. With a daily average coal production of 0.594 MT, marking a 30.75% surge, up from 0.445MT of daily average coal production in the same period of last year, it surpassed all previous records.

Coal dispatch from both captive and commercial mines also reached all-time-high in December 2024, with 17.67 MT of coal dispatched during the month, representing a 33.20% increase from the daily average of 0.426 MT in December 2023, with a daily average dispatch of 0.570 MT.

The total amount of coal dispatched from both captive and commercial mines between April 1 and December 31, 2024, reached 137.34 MT, representing a 33.95% increase from 102.53 MT during the corresponding period last year.
