Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened higher on Friday, breaking a four-session losing streak, as improved global sentiment supported investor confidence. Expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate hike later this month have eased, lifting global equities and pulling bond yields lower.

The BSE Sensex was up around 500 points at 76,652.19, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose to 23,927.10, in early trade, extending the market's rebound after four consecutive sessions of losses.

Top gainers today

Trent emerged as the top gainer among the selected NSE heavyweights, rising 1.95% to ₹2,870.60. IT stocks also attracted buying interest, with Wipro advancing 1.47% and Infosys gaining 1% during the session. Reliance Industries rose 0.83% to ₹1,313.30 and recorded the highest trading value of ₹166.95 crore among these counters, followed by Infosys at ₹86.02 crore.

Jio Financial Services added 0.78%, while Wipro saw the highest trading volume at 18.84 lakh shares, reflecting strong activity in the technology major. The gains came as Indian equities opened higher on September 4 after four consecutive sessions of declines, supported by positive global cues.

Top losers in early trade today

On the downside, Cipla emerged as the biggest loser in early trade, falling 1.20% to ₹1,378. Eicher Motors declined 0.92% to ₹7,619.50, while Maruti Suzuki slipped 0.72% to ₹12,764. Nestle India and Sun Pharma also traded lower, falling 0.56% and 0.44%, respectively. Cipla recorded the highest trading volume among the top losers at 1.97 lakh shares, while Eicher Motors saw the highest trading value at ₹40.68 crore. The early weakness was visible across pharmaceutical, automobile and FMCG stocks, although the broader market opened in positive territory.

The positive opening follows a weak session on Thursday. The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 417.49 points, or 0.55%, to close at 76,152.86. Although the index had opened in positive territory and climbed as much as 354.13 points, or 0.46%, to touch an intraday high of 76,924.48, it lost momentum towards the end of the session and closed lower.

Market breadth remained positive on the BSE, with 2,545 stocks advancing, compared with 1,778 declining, while 223 stocks remained unchanged.

The 50-share NSE Nifty also ended Thursday's session in the red, declining 41 points, or 0.17%, to settle at 23,873.45.

“The daily stochastic has approached oversold territory, and buying demand is seen emerging in Nifty from the key support area of 23,800–23,600. Hence, a pullback towards the 50-day EMA placed around 24,150 cannot be ruled out in coming sessions. However, the overall bias remains corrective below the current week’s high and the 50-day EMA placed around 24,150 levels. Only a move above the same will signal a pause in the downtrend and will open a pullback towards 24,300–24,350 levels in the coming sessions,” Pabitro Mukherjee, Deputy Vice President-Research, Bajaj Broking, said.

“From a short-term perspective, only a move above the last two-week highs placed around 24,380 will signal resumption of positive momentum. Key short-term support is placed at 23,800–23,600 levels, being the confluence of the previous major gap area and the low of July 2026,” he added.
