About

The past two years have been relentless for Zia Mody, co-founder and managing partner, AZB & Partners. At a time when regulatory scrutiny intensified and risk assessment became exacting, Mody doubled down on deepening the firm’s regulatory practice—while simultaneously embracing technology to stay ahead. The adoption of Harvey AI—a platform for legal professionals—marks a shift, enabling lawyers to generate contracts, pleadings, briefs, and internal memoranda with precision, populated by case-specific facts and arguments. Parallelly, AZB also significantly strengthened its infrastructure, energy, and projects practice. The firm has been at the heart of marquee deals—from the investment in Yes Bank by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. to MUFG’s investment in Shriram; the demerger of commercial, passenger vehicle divisions at Tata Motors, and transactions involving TCS and TPG. “These will broaden our expertise and deepen our domain strengths,” says Mody. Yet, growth has not been without shortcomings. The hunt for specialised talent remains a challenge. “The right talent is critical to performance,” she notes, underlining her focus on expanding niche practices and building a deeper bench.
