New modes of human potential emerging; extraordinary moment of possibilities, says Ananya Birla at launch of Birla AI Labs

Addressing a packed house at the Bharat Mandapam on Friday during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, business leader and musician Ananya Birla said that the world is witnessing a "Cambrian explosion of possibilities" as she officially launched Birla AI Labs.
Speaking in the presence of global tech titans and policymakers, Birla described the current technological shift as a "seminal moment in the history of human progress," far more profound than the industrial revolution.
From physical to cognitive amplification
Drawing a parallel to historical economic shifts, Birla noted that while the industrial revolution amplified physical capabilities, AI is now fundamentally rewriting the relationship between human potential and economic output by amplifying cognitive abilities.
"What we are living through is nothing less than a Cambrian explosion of possibilities—a phase where entirely new forms of value and new modes of human potential are emerging at a pace that defies our linear thinking," she stated.
Launch of Birla AI Labs
The centrepiece of her address was the unveiling of Birla AI Labs, an initiative with a dual mandate designed to bridge the gap between industrial legacy and frontier science.
The lab will operate on two fronts:
Apex AI body for Aditya Birla Group: Acting as a central hub to build and deploy AI solutions across the conglomerate’s global businesses—spanning manufacturing, financial services, and retail—to unlock tangible value for stakeholders.
Frontier research lab: Operating as a global research entity focused on original, cutting-edge science and translating it into proprietary products for the open market.
Industrial transformation in action
Birla highlighted how the $120 billion Aditya Birla Group is already seeing "tangible early gains" from AI. She cited specific use cases where AI is currently reshaping the group’s operations:
Real estate: Birla Estates is using AI to compress project concept timelines by 90%.
Financial services: Aditya Birla Capital has cut credit assessment preparation time by 90% and underwriting turnaround by 50%.
Manufacturing: Hindalco ’s proprietary factory intelligence integrates 24 operational KPIs in real-time, creating "digital twins" of smelters to orchestrate the entire energy ecosystem.
Social impact: In the microfinance business, Svatantra, AI is expected to unlock 30% productivity gains, which Birla stressed would directly improve lives by expanding capital access for women in rural India.
Beyond efficiency
Birla also touched upon the "moral obligation" of the industry to study the human consequences of AI. She said that Birla AI Labs has already conducted research with Delhi University on how AI usage affects student curiosity and cognitive agency.
"We who are building AI have a responsibility to understand its human consequences—not as an afterthought, but as a core part of the enterprise," she argued.
Vision for 2047
Reflecting on India’s journey toward becoming a $40 trillion economy by 2047, Birla stressed that technology would play the decisive role. She called for a "genuine sustained collaboration" between academia, industry, and policy to build a robust ecosystem.
"The playbook for what comes next has not yet been written," Birla concluded. "At the Aditya Birla Group and Birla AI Labs, we look forward to writing it together."
