PV wholesales jump 24.1% in June; Q1 FY27 sales hit record 12.74 lakh units: SIAM

Domestic automobile wholesales maintained strong momentum in June and the first quarter of FY27, with Passenger Vehicle (PV) dispatches rising 24.1% year-on-year to 3,88,144 units last month, while first-quarter PV sales touched an all-time high of 12,73,811 units, according to the data shared by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). PV dispatches stood at 312,851 units in June 2025, while April-June sales were at 10,11,884 units a year earlier.

According to SIAM, the industry's performance extended beyond passenger vehicles, with two-wheelers, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers also registering robust growth during the quarter, aided by resilient domestic demand, lower GST rates, softer financing costs and new product launches. The quarter also witnessed record exports across all major vehicle segments despite disruptions arising from geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said all major vehicle categories recorded high double-digit growth in the April-June quarter compared with the year-ago period, with passenger vehicle sales reaching 1.27 million units, three-wheelers 2.14 lakh units, two-wheelers 5.63 million units and commercial vehicles 2.65 lakh units.

"Looking ahead, SIAM expects demand to remain steady as the industry enters the festive season, supported by lower vehicle ownership costs following GST rationalisation, easier financing and improving macroeconomic conditions, although commodity prices and evolving geopolitical developments remain key risks," he noted.

Utility vehicles continue to drive PV growth

Passenger vehicle sales grew 25.9% year-on-year during April-June to 12.74 lakh units, led by utility vehicles (UVs), whose sales rose 28.6% to 8.62 lakh units. UVs now account for nearly 68% of the passenger vehicle market. Passenger car sales increased 21.3% to 3.68 lakh units, while van sales rose 14.8% to 44,344 units, underscoring broad-based growth across the segment, SIAM said.

Two-wheelers also delivered their strongest-ever first quarter, with sales rising 20.3% year-on-year to 56.29 lakh units, driven by a 30.8% jump in scooter sales to 21.79 lakh units, while motorcycle sales grew 14% to 33.09 lakh units. In the month of June alone, two-wheeler dispatches increased 18.6% to 18,51,400 units from 15,61,283 units a year earlier. SIAM attributed the sustained momentum in scooters to demand supported by lower GST rates.

 CVs, three-wheelers hit record Q1; exports at all-time high

Commercial vehicle sales climbed 18.3% to a record 2.65 lakh units during the quarter, led by double-digit growth in goods carriers amid continued replacement demand and demand from the mining and cement sectors. Three-wheeler sales rose 29.7% to an all-time high of 2.14 lakh units, while June dispatches were up 26.1% to 77,951 units, as per the auto industry body.

SIAM also said exports reached record levels across vehicle categories in the first quarter, with passenger vehicle exports rising 8.8%, two-wheeler exports growing 36.6%, three-wheeler exports surging 57.7%, and commercial vehicle exports increasing 43.3% year-on-year.

Commenting on the quarterly performance, SIAM President Shailesh Chandra said passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers recorded their highest-ever first-quarter sales, while every vehicle segment achieved record exports during the period.

He said, "The broad-based growth, despite headwinds arising from disruptions in West Asia, was supported by resilient domestic demand, lower GST rates, softer financing costs, a favourable base effect and new model introductions." Chandra, however, cautioned that the industry continues to closely monitor geopolitical developments and the progress of the monsoon due to their implications for agricultural output and rural demand.
