The American EV maker starts handing over six-seater electric SUV; expands portfolio amid rising demand for luxury EVs

Tesla India has commenced deliveries of the Model YL, its three-row, six-seater electric SUV priced at ₹61.99 lakh (ex-showroom), marking another step in the American electric vehicle maker's expansion strategy in one of the world's fastest-growing automobile markets. The deliveries come less than a month after the company introduced the Model YL in India and days after it expanded its line-up with the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant priced at ₹50.89 lakh.
The latest rollout strengthens Tesla's presence in India's premium EV segment, which has emerged as a key growth pocket despite electric vehicles accounting for only around 4% of total passenger vehicle sales. Industry estimates suggest passenger EV sales crossed 1.75 lakh units in 2025, with premium offerings gaining traction among affluent urban buyers.
The Model YL is positioned as a family-oriented offering with seating for six occupants and a claimed driving range of up to 681 km on the WLTP cycle. Tesla said the vehicle can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 5 seconds and offers cargo capacity of up to 2,539 litres, making it one of the largest electric SUVs currently available in the premium segment.
The launch follows Tesla's recent introduction of the Model Y Premium RWD, which offers a WLTP-certified range of up to 500 km and is positioned as the company's most affordable product in India. Together, the two models give Tesla a wider presence across the premium EV market, where it competes with offerings from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BYD, Hyundai and Kia.
Alongside product launches, Tesla is expanding its ownership ecosystem in India. The company said it currently operates service centres and body shops in Mumbai, Gurugram, Delhi and Pune, and plans to add facilities in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Ahmedabad during the current quarter. The automaker is also leveraging over-the-air software updates and remote diagnostics to reduce maintenance requirements and improve customer convenience.
"Tesla India has commenced deliveries of the newly launched Model YL through our direct-to-consumer business model, which prioritises customer satisfaction, ensures a consistent ownership experience and enables seamless direct deliveries across India," a Tesla spokesperson said.
The start of deliveries comes as Tesla looks to build scale in a premium EV market that remains relatively small in absolute volumes but is growing faster than the broader passenger vehicle industry. The company's success will ultimately depend not only on product appeal but also on its ability to expand charging, service and retail infrastructure across key urban centres.
