SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft. Currently, more than 200 aircraft have been produced and are operated by more than 16 commercial airlines.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited said on Tuesday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC), Russia, to produce SJ-100, a civil commuter aircraft, in Moscow, Russia. Prabhat Ranjan, HAL and Oleg Bogomolov, PJSC UAC, Russia, signed the MoU in the presence of D. K. Sunil, CMD, HAL and Vadim Badeka, Director General, PJSC UAC.
According to the terms of the MoU, HAL will have the right to manufacture SJ-100 aircraft for domestic customers. SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft. As of today, more than 200 aircraft have been produced and are operated by more than 16 commercial airlines. According to HAL, the SJ-100 will be a “game changer” for short-haul connectivity under the UDAN Scheme in India.
According to HAL, this collaboration will also be the first instance in which a complete passenger aircraft will be produced in India. The last such project was HAL’s production of AVRO HS748, which started in 1961 and ended in 1988. It is estimated that over the next ten years, the Indian aviation sector will require over 200 jets in this category for regional connectivity and an additional 350 aircraft for the Indian Ocean region to serve nearby international tourist destinations.
The manufacturing of the SJ-100 aircraft, avers HAL, marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Indian aviation industry. “It’s a step towards fulfilling the dream of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in the civil aviation sector. Manufacturing will also strengthen the private sector and create direct and indirect jobs in the aviation industry,” reads a release from HAL.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said earlier this month that the UDAN scheme has facilitated over 1.56 crore passengers through 3.23 lakh flights in the nine years since its launch. According to Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, UDAN has been a transformational initiative that is aimed at making travel affordable and accessible to the common citizen. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continue the scheme through 2027 via an expanded UDAN scheme that would focus on connectivity in the north-eastern, hilly, and aspirational regions, along with the development of 120 new destinations.
