M&M to take possession of first 800 acres for ₹15,000 crore Nagpur plant; facility to make 5 lakh vehicles, 1 lakh tractors annually

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. is moving towards taking possession of the first package of around 800 acres for its planned ₹15,000 crore integrated automobile and tractor manufacturing facility at additional Butibori in Nagpur, Maharashtra, as the automaker advances a project that will have an annual production capacity of more than 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors.

The greenfield facility, announced earlier this year, will span 1,500 acres in Vidarbha and will become Mahindra’s largest integrated manufacturing facility in the country once fully operational. The project will also be complemented by a 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar, which will supply components to the new Nagpur facility as well as Mahindra’s existing manufacturing facilities at Chakan and Nashik.

Focus on multiple powertrains, future technologies

Alongside the development of the manufacturing facility, Mahindra is building the workforce capabilities required to support production of automobiles and tractors across multiple powertrains and future technologies.

The company plans to draw on the experience and expertise of associates who have been part of its existing manufacturing operations. Over the next two to three years, these skilled and experienced associates will have an opportunity to participate in a detailed selection process for roles at the new Nagpur facility.

The selection process will assess technical capability, demonstrated behaviours, alignment with Mahindra’s values and the ability to collaborate effectively, the company said.

Nagpur skilling centre planned

Mahindra also plans to establish a skilling centre in Nagpur to build capabilities in areas including mechanical operations, welding and painting.

The initiative is aimed at creating the skills base required for the new manufacturing ecosystem while opening up employment opportunities in the region. Mahindra said further details on workforce requirements, opportunities and the associated selection processes will be communicated as the project progresses.

Once fully operational, the Nagpur facility will have annual capacity for more than 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors. The supplier park in Sambhajinagar will additionally serve the company’s Chakan and Nashik facilities, creating a wider manufacturing and supplier network across Maharashtra.
