A full emergency was declared at Mumbai airport as a precaution.
A SpiceJet aircraft lost a wheel during take-off from Gujarat’s Kandla airport. A video of the wheel separating from the aircraft was captured by a passenger onboard the flight.
The Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft landed safely in Mumbai. A full emergency was declared at Mumbai airport as a precaution.
“On September 12, an outer wheel of a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft operating from Kandla to Mumbai was found at the runway after take-off. The aircraft continued its journey to Mumbai and landed safely,” the budget carrier said in statement.
A spokesperson of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) said that the aircraft landed safely on Runway 27. “An aircraft from Kandla made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) at 15:51 hrs on 12 September 2025 after reporting a technical issue… Normal operations resumed shortly after,” the spokesperson said.
SpiceJet, whose domestic market share slipped to 1.9% in July, has been facing a sustained financial stress due to reduced flying fleet and grounding of several aircraft. The no-frills airline reported a net loss of ₹238 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, compared with a profit of ₹150 crore in the year-ago period.
More than half of SpiceJet’s fleet is currently grounded. Its fleet comprises a mix of Boeing 737-8 MAX, Boeing 737-800 and Q400 turboprops.
The incident also comes days after SpiceJet, in its annual report for the financial year 2024-25, stated that it has provided an interest-free advance to its chairman and managing director Ajay Singh amounting to ₹32 crore for a period of five years. The low-cost carrier said this “advance is not prejudicial to the interest of the company”.
