Auto PLI draws ₹44,326 crore investment, creates 67,820 jobs: Ministry of Heavy Industries
Auto PLI disburses ₹2,386 crore in incentives as 225 manufacturing units come up nationwide; battery storage PLI attracts ₹5,180 crore investment but awaits first payout
The government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the automobile and auto component sector has attracted investments worth ₹44,326 crore and generated 67,820 jobs as of March 31, 2026, while incentives worth ₹2,386.36 crore have been disbursed to eligible companies, the Ministry of Heavy Industries informed Parliament on Tuesday.
The scheme, approved in September 2021 with a budgetary outlay of ₹25,938 crore, has also led to incremental sales of ₹52,414 crore over the FY20 base year, the ministry replied to questions in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
To encourage domestic manufacturing of advanced automotive technologies, the scheme requires a minimum domestic value addition (DVA) of 50% for companies seeking incentives. As of July 16, 2026, 18 applicants had received DVA certificates covering 154 products and variants, indicating progress in localisation of advanced automotive products.
The ministry said the Auto PLI is implemented on a pan-India basis, allowing approved companies to establish manufacturing facilities anywhere in the country. No state-specific incentives are offered under the scheme.
A total of 225 manufacturing units have been set up under the Auto PLI scheme across the country. Maharashtra leads with 66 units, followed by Tamil Nadu with 38, Haryana with 35 and Karnataka with 28. Gujarat has 10 units, Uttar Pradesh 13 and Uttarakhand nine, while Rajasthan has seven.
In contrast, the PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage is yet to witness its first incentive payout despite attracting ₹5,180 crore in investments and creating 1,277 direct jobs as of May 31, 2026. The scheme, approved in May 2021 with an outlay of ₹18,100 crore to support 50 GWh battery manufacturing capacity, has not received any incentive claims from beneficiary firms so far.
The ministry said four projects with a combined awarded capacity of 40 GWh have been allocated under the ACC PLI scheme. Ola Cell Technologies has secured 20 GWh in Tamil Nadu, while ACC Energy Storage has been allotted 5 GWh in Karnataka. Reliance New Energy Battery Storage and Reliance New Energy Battery have been awarded 5 GWh and 10 GWh capacities, respectively, in Gujarat.
