India touched 475 GW of production capacity in 2025, way ahead of the previously set 500 GW production capacity by 2030.
India has set a target to produce 900 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2032, said Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar. He added that the country touched 475 GW of production capacity in 2025, way ahead of the previously set 500 GW production capacity by 2030.
"India has become the world’s third-largest producer of solar and wind energy, and has seen a 90% increase in electricity capacity over the past decade," Khattar said during the BRICS Energy Ministers’ meeting held on Monday in Brasília, Brazil’s capital.
Extending an invitation to the member nations as India will host the event next year, Khattar said energy security is one of the most pressing challenges currently. He emphasised the need to strengthen BRICS cooperation to ensure economic stability and sustainability as well as to promote equitable access to energy resources globally.
Khattar said India was marching fast towards achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) like achieving 20% ethanol blending milestone, advancing biofuel adoption and emissions reduction, investing in smart grids, advanced metering infrastructure, and an expanded transmission network, including the Green Energy Corridor.
The country has also set ambitious goals for green hydrogen and nuclear energy, including a 100-GW nuclear capacity target by 2047. India is also launching a domestic Carbon Credit Market, inviting global collaboration, the minister added.
