India's electronics manufacturing output has surged seven-fold and mobile phone production has jumped 33 times over the past decade, providing a strong foundation for the country's semiconductor ambitions, Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Parliament on Wednesday.
Replying to a written question in the Lok Sabha, the Electronics and Information Technology Minister said memory chips are part of the government's semiconductor programme, with Micron and Sahasra already producing memory products in the country.
Electronics production has increased nearly seven-fold to about ₹13.11 lakh crore in FY26 from around ₹1.9 lakh crore in FY15, while electronics exports have grown more than eleven-fold to ₹4.24 lakh crore during the same period.
Mobile phone manufacturing has witnessed even faster growth, rising from around ₹18,000 crore in FY15 to ₹6.27 lakh crore in FY26. Mobile phone exports surged from about ₹1,500 crore to ₹2.59 lakh crore over the period, reflecting India's growing role in global electronics supply chains.

According to the government, Micron manufactures DRAM, NAND Flash memory and solid-state drives (SSDs), while Sahasra produces NAND Flash memory. The minister, however, did not disclose whether additional companies have committed to setting up memory chip manufacturing facilities in India.
The government said global demand for memory devices and advanced chips has been driven primarily by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) servers and data centres.
This surge in demand has tightened global supplies and pushed up memory chip prices, prompting manufacturers worldwide to increase investments and production capacities
“The Government adopted structured and targeted policy initiatives for the development of electronics manufacturing across the entire value chain including memory chips and other semiconductors. As a result, India now has emerged as one of the major electronics manufacturing ecosystems,” the Minister said.
The minister said the Semicon India Programme, launched in January 2022, was designed to support semiconductor fabrication, display fabs, semiconductor packaging and indigenous chip design, recognising the strategic importance of semiconductors for both economic growth and national security.
Separately, the Electronics Development Fund (EDF), a Fund of Funds under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has invested ₹257.77 crore in eight SEBI-registered venture funds, which have collectively deployed ₹1,335.77 crore across 128 startups and companies as of June 30, 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen India's electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) and IT ecosystem by providing risk capital to innovation-driven startups focused on indigenous technology development and intellectual property creation.
The EDF-supported startups have collectively raised around ₹22,553.82 crore from the market and created or acquired 373 intellectual properties, reflecting the fund's multiplier effect on private capital. The programme completed its investment phase in February 2024 and is currently in the divestment phase. Karnataka accounted for the highest number of investments, with Bengaluru alone attracting funding for 89 startups.
