Gone are the days of rushed itineraries and overcrowded hotspots as Indian travellers are redefining their approach to summer getaways this year with the rising popularity of curated itineraries, quieter escapes, and value-packed planning.

Indians are embracing a "maximiser mindset", prioritising meaningful, cost-effective, and immersive experiences, according to Skyscanner’s Smarter Summer Report. Travellers are reimagining holidays by exploring lesser-known locales or timing trips to sidestep peak-season chaos.

“This summer, travellers are being more intentional. They want value-packed trips without the stress of high costs,” shares Mohit Joshi, Travel and Destinations Expert at Skyscanner. “For instance, many believe weekends are always the priciest days to fly, which isn’t necessarily true. Our report highlights budget-friendly insights like Sunday being the cheapest day to travel and August 25 marking the most affordable week of the season.”

With 96% of Indians planning to travel as much or more than they did last year, summer vacations are a top priority. A remarkable 95% say they aim to maximise their summer getaways by being savvier with their plans. Flexible travel dates, alternative destinations, and curated itineraries are becoming the go-to strategies to stretch budgets while ensuring memorable experiences.

Interestingly, 58% of travellers are venturing into previously unexplored destinations, while 51% are combining multiple spots into a single trip. This pivot towards exploration signals a shift from conventional tourism to experiential travel.

One in two respondents is open to traveling during these off-peak months, underscoring a trend toward intentional and hassle-free vacations.

Sherwin Rebello, founder of The Land of Wanderlust, says, “We’re seeing a rise in travellers embracing slower, more immersive journeys. Whether it’s young backpackers, digital nomads, or families, the focus is on meaningful, adaptable travel.”

 Value-driven wanderlust

Budget-conscious travel continues to dominate the Indian mindset. A significant 62% of travellers actively seek economical accommodations, and 56% rely on tools like Skyscanner to compare prices for flights, hotels, and car rentals. Flexibility is another key factor, with 84% of respondents willing to adjust travel dates and 47% ready to fly on less popular days to score better deals.

“Flexible date options and multi-city search tools are game changers,” Joshi emphasizes. “They allow travellers to unlock savings and enhance their experiences, ensuring each trip delivers maximum value.”

Yet, decision-making is proving to be a challenge. Nearly half (49%) of Indian travellers have not finalised their plans, with 38% still unsure about their destination. Skyscanner’s report aims to bridge this gap by offering tips, tools, and curated lists of cost-effective destinations.

Half of Indian travellers are chasing cooler climes this summer, pushing hill stations and high-altitude retreats into the spotlight. Social media continues to influence younger audiences, while older travellers and families lean toward private, flexible group trips that balance adventure and comfort.
