No.9 on the Fortune India-Interbrand Most Valuable Celebrities list, Alia Bhatt’s evolution into a celebrity who seamlessly balances acting, entrepreneurship, global fashion influence, and brand power positions her as one of the defining cultural figures of her generation.

This story belongs to the Fortune India Magazine june-2026-indias-most-valuable-celebrities issue.
FIRST, SHE WAS A child artist who made fleeting appearances on screen. Then, she became the Bollywood starlet launched by Karan Johar. But she was not one to let these privileges define her. Her choice of characters and portrayal slowly made her one of the most versatile actors of the contemporary Indian entertainment industry.
Nearly a decade and a half after her debut, Alia Bhatt’s career now extends far beyond cinema.
Her evolution into a rare modern celebrity who seamlessly balances acting, entrepreneurship, global fashion influence, and brand power positions her as one of the defining cultural figures of her generation. Indeed, a shape-shifter who adapts constantly and resists being defined by one identity.
Despite her privileged entry into Bollywood, Bhatt’s trajectory has been shaped less by lineage and more by her ability to perform in front of the camera. She has consistently challenged perceptions around her, transforming from a glamorous newcomer into an actor celebrated for emotional depth, versatility, and instinctive screen presence.
Main character energy
Bhatt made her official debut in 2012 with Student of the Year, directed by Karan Johar. The glossy campus drama instantly turned her into a youth sensation, but it also placed her within the stereotype of the conventional Bollywood starlet.
However, that image changed quickly and dramatically with Highway, directed by Imtiaz Ali. Bhatt delivered a deeply vulnerable performance that surprised critics and audiences alike. The film became the first major indication that she possessed far greater artistic range than everyone initially assumed. Her performance marked the beginning of a career defined by experimentation.
In Udta Punjab, she portrayed a migrant worker trapped in Punjab’s drug crisis, shedding every ounce of glamour in favour of raw emotional realism. Acting alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Dear Zindagi reinforced Bhatt’s growing reputation as a performer capable of reflecting contemporary urban realities.
Her climb continued with films such as Raazi, where she played an Indian spy caught between patriotism and personal sacrifice, and Gully Boy, in which her fiery portrayal of Safeena became a pop culture phenomenon.
By the time she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, she had firmly established herself as one of Hindi cinema’s most bankable and critically respected actors. Carrying a large-scale period drama almost entirely on her shoulders, she displayed the authority and emotional command of a mature leading star.
Bhatt’s influence today extends far beyond acting. She has emerged as one of India’s most recognisable global brand ambassadors, representing the growing intersection of Bollywood and luxury fashion. In 2023, she became the first Indian global ambassador for the Italian luxury house Gucci, a move widely seen as a milestone for Indian representation in global luxury fashion.
Since then, she has regularly appeared at international fashion events, including global fashion weeks, the Met Gala, and Cannes Red Carpet, helping position Indian celebrity culture within the global luxury conversation. Her global influence expanded further when L’Oréal Paris announced her as a worldwide ambassador in 2024. The beauty giant described Bhatt as a symbol of inclusivity, entrepreneurship, and modern femininity, highlighting her growing stature beyond cinema.
She has also represented several leading brands across beauty, fashion, and lifestyle, including Maybelline, Philips, Manyavar, Flipkart, and Levi’s, of which she was named a global ambassador in 2025. Industry analysts consistently rank her among India’s most valuable celebrity endorsers, with her appeal spanning both luxury and mass-market audiences.
“What matters for a brand when it comes to choosing a celebrity to endorse it is the relatability and believability. And Alia scores high on both counts,” says V. Sunil, creative director, Motherland Joint Ventures. “She comes across as a strong, young, and successful personality who people, especially the youth, could relate to. She is not seen or perceived as just a song-and-dance film personality. That always worked to her advantage,” adds the advertising professional who spearheaded prestigious campaigns such as Make In India and God’s Own Country.
In constant motion
Equally significant is Bhatt’s emergence as an entrepreneur. In 2020, she founded Ed-a-Mamma, a sustainable clothing and lifestyle brand focussed on children, maternity wear, and environmentally conscious living. Rooted in themes of sustainability, nature, and mindful parenting, the brand reflected Bhatt’s desire to build a business aligned with her personal values rather than merely attaching her name to a label.
Ed-a-Mamma quickly evolved into one of the most visible celebrity-led businesses in India’s lifestyle sector. The company later expanded into baby care and personal care products, strengthening its position in the parenting market.
In 2023, Reliance Retail acquired a 51% majority stake in Ed-a-Mamma, underscoring the brand’s commercial potential and expanding Bhatt’s role as a founder-entrepreneur. She has also invested in companies such as SuperBottoms and Phool.co, signalling a broader interest in sustainable and consumer-focussed businesses. She was also an investor in Nykaa.
Bhatt’s entrepreneurial ambitions also extend into storytelling. Through her production company Eternal Sunshine Productions, she backed Darlings, a dark comedy dealing with domestic abuse and toxic relationships. The project reflected her preference for narratives that blend entertainment with social commentary, while also giving her creative control behind the camera.
Her personal life has often attracted public fascination as well. In 2022, she married actor Ranbir Kapoor, her co-star in Brahmastra: Part One–Shiva, and the couple later welcomed their daughter, Raha Kapoor. Yet, even amid intense media scrutiny, Bhatt has maintained a carefully balanced public image: approachable yet aspirational, glamorous yet relatable.
Today, Bhatt occupies a uniquely influential position in Indian popular culture. She is not merely a successful actor but a modern celebrity brand — equally at ease on film sets, fashion runways, entrepreneurial panels, and global red carpets.
In an industry increasingly shaped by reinvention and crossover appeal, Bhatt represents a new generation of Indian stardom: one that is global in visibility, entrepreneurial in ambition, and deeply aware of the power of personal identity.
