The stock declined as much as 6.65% to an intraday low of ₹998.15 on the NSE before trimming some losses.

The sharp decline came despite the bank reporting a 72% year-on-year jump in consolidated net profit to ₹1,037 crore for the quarter ended June 2026, aided by lower provisions and improved operating profit. However, investors appeared concerned over muted loan growth, weaker fee income and pressure on the bank's underlying profitability.

Profit rises, but core business remains subdued

Net Interest Income (NII), a key gauge of a bank's core lending business, rose just 1% year-on-year to ₹4,685 crore, while total other income declined 17% to ₹1,787 crore. Total income slipped 5% to ₹6,471 crore, although operating profit increased 8% to ₹2,773 crore as operating expenses fell 13%.

Provisions and contingencies declined 21% year-on-year to ₹1,384 crore, helping lift profit after tax to ₹1,037 crore from ₹604 crore a year earlier.

The bank's advances fell 2% year-on-year to ₹3.26 lakh crore, even as deposits grew 4% to ₹4.15 lakh crore. On a sequential basis, however, average loan growth returned, with average total loans rising 3% quarter-on-quarter as the bank indicated a shift "from consolidation to growth."

Asset quality improves

Asset quality continued to strengthen during the quarter, with the gross non-performing asset (GNPA) ratio improving to 3.25% from 3.43% in the previous quarter, while the net NPA ratio eased to 0.95% from 1.00%. The provision coverage ratio remained stable at 71%, while the bank maintained a healthy capital adequacy ratio of 17.15% and an average liquidity coverage ratio of 127%.

He added that the bank is building a diversified portfolio across retail, SME and rural businesses while investing in technology and AI-led capabilities to enhance customer experience and improve productivity.

Despite the improved profitability and strengthening asset quality, Thursday's market reaction suggested investors are waiting for stronger evidence of sustained growth in the bank's core lending franchise before turning positive on the stock.
