In a major shift from earlier threats of imminent military action, Donald J. Trump on Tuesday (U.S. time), or early Wednesday in India, said the United States would extend the ceasefire with Iran, pausing planned strikes while maintaining pressure through a continued naval blockade, as negotiations hinge on Tehran presenting a “unified proposal”.

The announcement comes amid rapidly evolving developments, including uncertainty over diplomatic engagement, rising regional threats, and fresh tensions at sea.

Trump pauses strikes, extends ceasefire

In a statement, Trump said, “We have been asked to hold our attack on the Country of Iran… I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade… and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted”.

Talks uncertain, Vance trip on hold

Despite the ceasefire extension, the diplomatic track remains fragile. The proposed meeting in Islamabad appears to be in limbo, with U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s trip either delayed or put on hold.

Iran is yet to officially comment on Trump’s announcement extending the ceasefire.

Ahead of the proposed second round of talks, which now appears unlikely to take place, Tehran has maintained a cautious stance, insisting it will not engage under coercion, even as backchannel signals suggest conditional openness to negotiations.

Even as Washington paused strikes, tensions intensified elsewhere. A senior Iranian military commander issued a warning, threatening to disrupt the region’s energy lifelines if conflict resumes.

“If southern neighbors allow the enemy to use their facilities to attack Iran, they should say goodbye to oil production in the Middle East region,” said General Majid Mousavi of the Revolutionary Guard, according to Associated Press.

Separately, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States of violating the ceasefire through maritime actions.

“Striking a commercial vessel and taking its crew hostage is an even greater violation,” he said, referring to the boarding of an Iranian oil tanker by U.S. forces.

Blockade continues, pressure remains

Despite the pause in strikes, Trump made clear that pressure on Iran would not ease. The U.S. naval blockade remains in place, continuing to restrict Iranian shipping and exert economic pressure.

The ceasefire extension is explicitly tied to Iran’s ability to present a coherent negotiating position, with Washington indicating that military options remain ready if talks collapse.

Markets turn cautious

The S&P 500 ended 0.63% lower, while the Nasdaq declined 0.59% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 293 points. Meanwhile, GIFT Nifty was trading 216 points lower as of 1:50 am IST on April 22.

Brent crude slipped below $100 a barrel after climbing earlier in the day amid uncertainty over a ceasefire extension.

With the ceasefire extended but tensions far from resolved, the situation remains highly volatile. Diplomacy now hinges on whether Iran can present a unified proposal, even as both sides continue to signal readiness for escalation.
