Chuck Norris, the martial artist and Hollywood actor who became a global cultural icon, has died at the age of 86, his family said in a statement.

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” the Norris family said.

In an Instagram post, the family said Norris died on March 19 and described his passing as sudden, adding that they would not disclose further details.

“While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace,” the statement said.

“As we grieve this loss, we kindly ask for privacy for our family during this time,” they added.

Confirms recent hospitalisation

The statement also acknowledged that Norris had recently been hospitalised, an episode that had drawn concern among fans.

“We know many of you had heard about his recent hospitalization, and we are truly grateful for the prayers and support you sent his way,” the family said.

No cause of death was disclosed.

Legacy beyond film and martial arts

Norris rose to prominence as a martial artist before transitioning into film and television, becoming widely known for action roles and later for his long-running television series Walker, Texas Ranger.

“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather… and the heart of our family,” the family said.

Bollywood icon Akshay Kumar has expressed grief regarding Norris' demise.

"Growing up as a martial artist, watching Chuck Norris in Way of the Dragon, Missing in Action and many more wasn’t just entertainment…it was education. The discipline, strength, and that effortless command he brought on screen stayed with me. Grateful for the inspiration that shaped a part of me," Akshay Kumar said in a social media post.

Global fan following

Beyond his film career, Norris developed a massive global following, including through internet culture, where he became the subject of widely shared “Chuck Norris facts” memes.

“Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives ... To him, you were not just fans, you were his friends,” the family said.

“While our hearts are broken, we are deeply grateful for the life he lived and for the unforgettable moments we were blessed to share with him,” the statement added.
