In his first UN General Assembly address since returning to office, Trump reiterated that securing a ceasefire in Gaza is a priority for his administration.
U.S. president Donald Trump has indicated that a major development in the Middle East in relation to the ongoing Gaza war is expected soon.
“We have a real chance for GREATNESS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. ALL ARE ON BOARD FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL, FIRST TIME EVER. WE WILL GET IT DONE,” Trump wrote in a Sunday post on his social media platform Truth Social.
Trump will be meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today during latter’s visit to the White House. Neither the parties involved, nor President Trump have disclosed any further details on whether a potential agreement has been reached or brokered by the United States.
In his first UN General Assembly address since returning to office, Trump reiterated that securing a ceasefire in Gaza is a priority for his administration.
“As everyone knows, I have also been deeply engaged in seeking a ceasefire in Gaza, we have to get that done, have to get it done. As we have got to come together, and we will come together, got to get it done, we have to stop the war in Gaza immediately. We have to stop it. We have to get it done. We have to negotiate, immediately, have to negotiate peace. We got to get the hostages back. We want all 20 back. We don't want two and four,” Trump said.
He noted that earlier efforts involving his team, including Steve Witkoff and Marco Rubio, had succeeded in bringing most hostages home but acknowledged that the final group of 20 has proven the most difficult.
“As you know, I got, along with Steve Witkoff and others that helped us, Marco Rubio, we got most of them back. We were involved in all of them, but I always said, the last 20 are going to be the hardest, and that's exactly what happened. We have to get them back now. We don't want to get back two and then another two and then one, and then three and have this process. No, we want them all back.”
The Trump administration has been pushing a 21-point ceasefire and post-war governance proposal between Israel and Gaza. This proposal includes the release of all hostages held by Hamas.
According to media reports, however, Hamas has claimed to not have received any new proposals following Trump’s post. Key previous talks involving the United States, Egypt and Qatar collapsed earlier this year following an Israeli strike in Doha that targeted senior Hamas figures.
This comes at a time when the war in Gaza is in its second year since October 7 Hamas attacks in 2023 and has killed several thousands of people. The Monday meeting between Trump and Netanyahu comes as global divisions over the war remain stark. Netanyahu’s recent address to the UN General Assembly prompted walkouts from dozens of countries.
