Maruti Suzuki India has formally stepped into the electric vehicle space with the launch of the e Vitara, its first homegrown battery electric SUV, introducing a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership model to lower upfront costs. Priced at an introductory ₹10.99 lakh under the BaaS structure, the e Vitara allows customers to pay a battery usage charge of ₹3.99 per kilometre, effectively separating the vehicle and battery cost. The move signals the company’s attempt to ease price barriers while accelerating EV adoption in a highly cost-sensitive market.

Ownership structure and battery options

The e Vitara is offered with two battery pack options — 61kWh and 49kWh — with a claimed driving range of up to 543 km for the larger pack under test conditions. The battery is covered by an 8-year or 1,60,000 km warranty, whichever is earlier. The vehicle carries a standard 3-year or 1 lakh km warranty, with extension options available up to eight years.

Under the BaaS structure, customers finance the vehicle and battery separately. The introductory offer is valid until March 31, 2026.

Launching the vehicle, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the company’s EV strategy is aimed at positioning the e Vitara as a mainstream choice, supported by a 543 km range, the ‘e for me’ charging ecosystem and over 1,500 EV-ready service centres. He added that flexible ownership options under the BaaS model are intended to make the transition to electric mobility easier for customers.

Charging network and ecosystem rollout

Maruti Suzuki has operationalised its ‘e for me’ digital platform to integrate home and public charging access. The company has tied up with 13 charge point operators and aggregators, enabling access to over 2,000 charging points across its dealer network, in addition to partner-operated infrastructure.

It has indicated a target of supporting more than one lakh public charging points by 2030. The app supports charger discovery, scheduling, digital payments and home charger management. Complimentary home installation of a 7.4 kW AC wall box charger is included under the introductory package.

Buyback plans and service readiness

The e Vitara is being offered with optional assured buyback plans. The 3-year/45,000 km plan offers up to 60% retained value, while a 4-year/60,000 km plan offers 50%, both calculated on ex-showroom pricing terms.

The company has made over 1,500 workshops EV-ready and deployed trained personnel across its Nexa network to support after-sales operations.

Bookings are open through Nexa outlets and the company website with an initial payment of ₹21,000.
