As Fortune India had earlier reported that additional fulfilment stores will be launched ahead of the festive sale, earlier this month, Amazon announced opening of 45 new delivery stations, across Tier 2 and 3 cities.
These cities included Rai Bareli and Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, Maraimalai and Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, Howrah and East Midnapore in West Bengal, Port Blair in Andaman, Narsipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Srinagar and Udhampur in Jammu & Kashmir, Ranchi and Giridih in Jharkhand, and Tinsukia and Silchar in Assam, the company stated.
“Compared to last year, we are already delivering same-day to 50% more cities and next-day to twice as many locations across the country. The launch of 45 new delivery stations, allows us to deliver happiness with greater speed and reliability to customers across the country, including those in tier II and III cities,” said Abhinav Singh, VP – Operations, Amazon India and Australia.
This takes the total last-mile delivery stations count to 2,000 across the country. Over 12 new fulfilment centres and 6 new sort centres have been created, adding 8.6 million cubic feet of storage capacity and 5 lakh sq. feet of sortation area to the entire operations network of the company.
In the wake of this sale, the company also extended employment to over 1.50 lakh seasonal work opportunities to boost its pan-India operations network and deliver customer orders reliably across the country.
A significant uptick in sales is expected this festive season, following the implementation of the next generation of GST reforms from September 22.
“With a reduction in GST on millions of products, along with exciting deals already planned by sellers, customers can look forward to great savings this Amazon Great Indian Festival,” said Saurabh Srivastava, VP – Categories, Amazon India.
In this regard, Amazon is updating its systems with revised GST codes to help sellers transition smoothly to the new tax structure and pass benefits to customers as per regulations. The company has also reduced referral fees in fast-moving categories such as fashion, beauty, home appliances, and healthcare, aside from introducing seller-first tools such as the AI-powered Samriddhi Dashboard for better performance tracking and inventory planning.
In a bid to boost its AI-powered assistant Rufus, the company is enabling product comparisons, price history, and personalised suggestions, Lens AI features. Lens AI resembles Google AI Lens allowing shoppers to find items through photos.
Amazon is among the first e-commerce giant to be starting with its annual festive sale. Flipkart's Big Billion Days sale is set to commence from September 30.
