Government pushes citizens to recover forgotten bank deposits and policies under ‘Your Money, Your Right’ drive

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary on Thursday addressed a mega camp in New Delhi under the ‘Your Money, Your Right’ campaign, an initiative aimed at helping people recover unclaimed financial assets such as bank deposits, insurance claims, dividends, and money from mutual funds.

The programme, organised by the Department of Financial Services (DFS) under the Ministry of Finance, brought together banking and financial regulators to guide citizens through the claim process. Officials from the RBI, IRDAI, SEBI, PFRDA and the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority also took part.

Rekha Gupta said India’s banking system has long enjoyed public trust, and that digital services have strengthened this confidence. She said that the government’s push for digital delivery of services since 2014 has changed how people access financial systems and improved transparency.

Taking the campaign forward, she encouraged citizens to check whether any funds in their name are lying unclaimed. She said, “This is not just the recovery of common funds — it is the restoration of rights, fulfilment of justice, and affirmation of your entitlements. So far, we have returned approximately 850 million rupees to their rightful owners, and we will continue the efforts to return people's assets.”

Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the campaign reflects the government’s commitment to keeping citizens at the centre of public service. Addressing the gathering, he said, "Today, it is a great honour for me to be among you at this important programme, 'Your Money, Your Right' campaign. This initiative reflects the vision of the Government, which always places the citizen at the centre."

He added that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, public awareness and public trust have been treated as core national strengths. The campaign aims to reach every district in the country by December so that “no citizen is deprived of their old, accumulated capital.”

DFS Secretary M. Nagaraju explained the structure behind the initiative, saying, “When we began designing this campaign, we identified a simple and impactful approach – Awareness, Accessibility, and Action, the 3A framework.” He said more than ₹1,887 crore has already been returned to citizens in just two months.

He noted that Delhi alone has unclaimed financial assets worth ₹ 3,210.84 crore still pending and urged residents to participate actively so that families can receive the money due to them.
