Mehli Mistry to step down from Tata Medical Centre Trust on September 30

Mehli Mistry, director at M Pallonji Group and a close associate of the late Ratan Tata, is set to leave the Tata Medical Centre Trust after deciding not to seek another term. His existing tenure as a trustee ends on September 30, 2026.

Mistry reportedly informed Arun Pattatheyil, CEO of Tata Medical Centre, about the decision through an email dated September 15. He said he would not seek re-election after completing his current term and asked that his decision be formally recorded.

The communication was also sent to Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and trustees Vijay Singh, Darius J Khambata, Leah Tata, Maya Tata and Neville Tata, as per report.

The Tata Medical Centre Trust operates the 436-bed Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata, a not-for-profit hospital focused on cancer treatment. Besides providing treatment, the centre works in areas including cancer screening, early diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation and palliative care.

Mistry's recent exits from Tata-linked entities

Mistry's decision to leave the medical centre trust comes after changes in his association with several Tata-linked organisations.

In July 2026, he resigned from the board of RNT Associates Private Limited, the investment vehicle set up by Ratan Tata for managing his personal investments. The company has a portfolio of more than ₹1,000 crore, with investments including Ola Electric and Urban Company.

His association with the principal Tata Trusts ended earlier. In October 2025, Mistry was not reappointed to the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, despite an earlier resolution proposing his appointment as a lifetime trustee.

Ahead of the development, Mistry had approached the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner with a caveat, seeking to be heard before any changes were made to the trustees.

Tata Medical Centre's role

Tata Medical Centre is among the prominent healthcare initiatives within the Tata philanthropic network. Located in New Town, Kolkata, the facility started operations in 2011 and occupies a 13-acre campus.

A significant part of the centre's infrastructure is dedicated to subsidised care, with 75% earmarked for patients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The institution is associated with the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

Mistry's exit from the Tata Trusts

Mistry's exit from the two principal Tata Trusts took place in October 2025. On October 28, trustees did not approve his reappointment to the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

The decision came against the backdrop of differences among trustees over the appointment of a nominee to the Tata Sons board in 2025. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust together control a majority stake in Tata Sons.

Mistry, however, continued to serve on the boards of the Tata Education and Development Trust, Tata Medical Centre in Kolkata and Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital.
