Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has long admired Warren Buffett, both as a friend and as a brilliant business mind. Their friendship began in 1991 through Gates’ mother and quickly deepened as he was impressed by Buffett’s clarity of thought and insightful questions. Now, as Buffett passes the leadership baton to Berkshire Hathaway’s new CEO, Greg Abel, Gates has extended heartfelt congratulations to his dear friend on social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Threads.

“It was an incredible couple of days in Omaha. Every time I’m with Warren, I’m reminded how lucky I am to know him – not just as one of the greatest investors and philanthropists of all time, but as a mentor and a friend,” Gates said in his post.

“My life changed the day we met. I’ve learned so much from his integrity, humour, and generosity. Congratulations, Warren,” Gates added in his post.

Despite differing professional worlds—Buffett’s preference for stable, predictable businesses and Gates’ immersion in fast-changing tech—they bonded over a shared love of learning and intellectual curiosity. Gates has praised Buffett’s hands-off management style, focus on competitive “moats,” and simple yet powerful explanations. Their friendship, which began in the early 1990s, extended beyond business into playful intellectual challenges and vacations.

Recently, Gates was seen describing Buffett as one of the greatest CEOs in history and the most successful investor of all time. He acknowledged Buffett’s exceptional leadership at Berkshire Hathaway, highlighting his wisdom, integrity, and humour as defining traits. Gates also emphasised that Buffett's influence extends far beyond business, pointing to his philanthropic efforts as equally inspiring.

Berkshire Hathaway's board unanimously approved Greg Abel as the new CEO on Monday, following Warren Buffett's recommendation. Abel, currently vice chairman of non-insurance operations, will take over as CEO while Buffett remains chairman of the board. This move sets in motion the succession plan, ending Buffett's six-decade tenure as CEO. Abel faces the challenge of preserving Berkshire's core values and investment philosophy while managing its record $347.7 billion cash pile in a volatile world.
