Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday began a week-long visit to five countries—Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia—as part of an effort to enhance India’s engagement with the Global South and deepen cooperation across the Atlantic. The official visit, scheduled from July 2 to 9, includes bilateral meetings as well as participation in the BRICS Summit, which will be held in Brazil.

In a departure statement, Modi said the trip aims to reinforce partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic and strengthen India’s collaboration with regional and multilateral platforms including BRICS, the African Union, The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Caribbean Community, or CARICOM.

"I am confident that my visits to the five countries will reinforce our bonds friendship across the Global South, strengthen our partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic, and deepen engagements in the multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS and the CARICOM," PM Modi said in his departure statement.

Engagement with Africa and the Caribbean

Modi’s first stop is Ghana, where he is visiting on the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama. The Prime Minister described Ghana as a key partner in the African Union and ECOWAS and noted that the visit will focus on expanding cooperation in areas such as investment, health, energy, capacity building, and security. He is also scheduled to address the Parliament of Ghana.

"Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States. I look forward to my exchanges aimed at further deepening our historical ties and opening up new windows of cooperation, including in the areas of investment, energy, health, security, capacity building and development partnership. As fellow democracies, it will be an honour to speak at the Parliament of Ghana," the PM Modi noted.

On July 3–4, Modi will visit Trinidad & Tobago, where he is expected to meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The two countries share longstanding cultural and historical links, including the migration of Indian communities to the Caribbean nearly two centuries ago. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties and promoting people-to-people connections.

First visit to Argentina in decades

From Port of Spain, the Prime Minister will travel to Buenos Aires, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years. In Argentina, Modi will meet President Javier Milei.

"Argentina is a key economic partner in Latin America and a close collaborator in the G20. I look forward to my discussions with President H.E. Javier Milei, whom I also had the pleasure of meeting last year. We will focus on advancing our a mutually beneficial cooperation, including in the areas of agriculture, critical minerals, energy, trade, tourism, technology, and investment," Modi said.

BRICS Summit and bilateral visit to Brazil

Modi will then attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6–7, where leaders of member countries will hold discussions on global economic and development issues. India has been a founding member of the BRICS group and continues to engage actively on its agenda.

Following the summit, Modi will visit Brasília for a bilateral meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. According to the Prime Minister’s statement, the visit will focus on strengthening cooperation in areas of shared interest and supporting initiatives within the Global South framework.

Concluding the visit in Namibia

The final stop will be Namibia, where Modi is scheduled to meet President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Discussions are expected to cover a range of areas, including development cooperation, energy, health, and education. Modi is also scheduled to address a joint session of the Namibian Parliament.

Describing the tour as an opportunity to consolidate partnerships with countries across different regions, the Prime Minister said the visits reflect India’s continued focus on inclusive development, shared democratic values, and cooperation through multilateral platforms.
