Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate, on September 17, the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026, a mega-event that is set to bring together global semiconductor industry leaders, government officials, state representatives, and sector experts as India looks to build on the momentum of its growing semiconductor ecosystem.
The three-day event, to be held from September 17-19 in New Delhi, is being organised under the theme 'Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem'.
"The event is proposed to be inaugurated by the PM on September 17, and we believe it will once again reiterate the commitment that the government has for the semiconductor sector," IT Secretary S Krishnan said.
The event comes at a time when India's semiconductor push is gaining pace under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the Semicon India programme.
"The conference will have a roundtable which will be chaired by the PM, and that will take place a day before September 17, with global CEOs," Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary, IT Ministry and CEO, ISM, said at a curtain-raiser briefing.
The prominent global CEOs who are expected at the event has not yet been disclosed.
The event is also expected to see participation of countries including Japan, Korea, Singapore, Germany and the Netherlands. The US, which has led international efforts on 'Pax Silica' for resilient supply chains in semiconductors, AI and critical minerals, is also expected to be present at the event.
Earlier this year, during the AI Impact Summit in February, India formally joined the 'Pax Silica' coalition, marking a significant milestone in the strengthening of strategic technology and supply chain cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.
It is pertinent to mention that while 12 projects have been approved under Semicon 1.0 -- three of which have already started commercial production and 2-3 more are expected to follow suit by the calendar year-end -- the Union Cabinet has also approved the next phase, Semicon 2.0, aimed at accelerating the development of a robust and resilient semiconductor ecosystem.
The government is also supporting semiconductor research, innovation and design by providing design tools to more than 332 academic institutes and 105 startups, according to a release.
Under the Design-Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, 24 startups have been approved to work on critical applications.
These initiatives are aimed at developing a holistic semiconductor ecosystem in India and advancing the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, it said.
The details of SEMICON India 2026 were announced by ISM, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and SEMI, the industry association promoting the semiconductor sector, at a press conference.
The event will bring together stakeholders from across the global semiconductor ecosystem, including industry leaders, government representatives, experts, academia and students, as per the release.
SEMICON India 2026 is expected to showcase developments across the semiconductor value chain as India seeks to cement its position in the global chip ecosystem.
Ashok Chandak, President, SEMI India & IESA, noted that SEMICON India's 2026 theme 'Silicon to Systems' reflects the nation's evolution towards creating a comprehensive and globally-competitive semiconductor value chain.
The remarkable global and Indian corporate interest in this year's event is a testament to the confidence that industry leaders place in India's semiconductor journey, he added.
