Reliance Industries has scaled up its battery manufacturing ambitions to 120 gigawatt hours (GWh) annually and signed a $3 billion long-term green ammonia supply agreement with Samsung C&T, as the conglomerate accelerated its push to build what it described as a fully integrated clean energy ecosystem.

Speaking at Reliance Industries' annual general meeting on Friday, executive director Anant Ambani said the company's new energy business is moving from construction to commissioning, with commercial revenues expected to start flowing this year.

"From the year 2027 onwards, new energy will begin contributing meaningfully to Reliance's financial performance," Anant Ambani said.

The comments mark one of the clearest timelines yet from Reliance on the commercialisation of its multi-billion-dollar new energy investments.

Battery capacity scaled up threefold

Anant Ambani said the first phase of Reliance's battery cell gigafactory, with an annual capacity of 40 GWh, remains on track for commissioning this year. All equipment has already been delivered to the site, he added.

The company has now committed to expanding capacity to 120 GWh annually.

"When commissioned, this will make Reliance one of the world's largest manufacturers of lithium iron phosphate batteries," he said.

According to the company, the battery facility forms part of the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex at Jamnagar, spread across 5,000 acres and designed as an integrated clean energy manufacturing ecosystem.

Green ammonia exports gain momentum

Reliance also announced a long-term supply agreement with Samsung C&T for green ammonia exports.

"I am proud to announce that Reliance has signed a landmark US$3 billion long-term supply agreement with Samsung C&T for green ammonia, which is among the largest green ammonia offtake contracts in the world," Anant Ambani said.

He added that the company is in advanced discussions with customers in Japan, South Korea and Europe for additional long-term export contracts.

Reliance's target of developing 3 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen-equivalent chemicals capacity over the next decade remains unchanged.

The company expects green ammonia, green urea, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) and biomethanol to emerge as key monetisation streams from its green energy platform.

Kutch renewable hub to generate 40 billion units annually

The company is developing a renewable energy hub across 5.5 lakh acres in Kutch, combining solar generation and battery storage infrastructure.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate more than 40 billion units of green electricity annually, equivalent to about 3% of India's current annual power requirement.

Anant Ambani said the company is targeting installation rates of 55 MW of solar capacity and 150 MWh of battery storage every day during peak construction phases.

Mukesh Ambani described the initiative as part of Reliance's broader strategy to reduce India's dependence on imported energy.

"Reliance is working on the most comprehensive, integrated and future-focused plan by any Indian corporate to boost India's energy sources in every way possible," he said.

The Reliance chairman added that India currently depends on external sources for more than 70% of its energy needs and called energy security a national priority.

New energy revenues to begin this year

Reliance said commercial revenue generation from its new energy business will begin this year through solar module sales, while the battery factory is scheduled for commissioning during FY27.

"The battery factory commissions this year. The Samsung C&T agreement is not a promise. It is a signed contract," Anant Ambani said.

The company also expects its green energy ecosystem to create around 200,000 jobs across manufacturing, renewable energy generation, storage and related infrastructure.

"Commercial revenues from solar modules start rolling in this year," he said, adding that the foundation of Reliance's clean energy platform has now been established after several years of investment and execution.
