The Tata Trusts have announced a landmark philanthropic grant to support the development of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore's (IIM Bangalore) new undergraduate campus in Bengaluru, marking a key milestone in the institute’s expansion into undergraduate education.
The endowment will support IIM Bangalore’s long-term academic vision, campus infrastructure, research ecosystem, and institutional roadmap as it establishes a world-class School of Undergraduate Studies. The new campus, located around 27 km from IIM Bangalore’s main campus, has been conceived as part of the institute’s broader effort to bring its globally recognised academic rigour to undergraduate education in India.
The School of Undergraduate Studies is set to commence academic operations in August this year with two four-year, full-time residential programmes: a BSc (Honours) in Economics with a minor in Data Science, and a BSc (Honours) in Data Science with a minor in Economics.
The programmes have been designed to integrate economics, data science and business studies through an interdisciplinary curriculum aimed at preparing students for an increasingly complex and data-driven economy. The inaugural batch will comprise 80 students, with 40 students enrolled in each programme, allowing for personalised learning, close faculty engagement, and intensive academic mentorship.
According to IIM Bangalore, the Tata Trusts’ grant will help build world-class academic and residential infrastructure while supporting the creation of research clusters in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, algorithmic design, Indian Knowledge Systems, and applied business learning. The funding will also strengthen the institute’s efforts to attract and nurture faculty talent across multiple disciplines.
The Tata Trusts said the commitment reflects its longstanding belief that investments in knowledge and educational institutions generate lasting societal impact. The philanthropic organisation has historically supported several institutions that have played a transformative role in India’s development and sees the new undergraduate initiative as aligned with that legacy.
“The Tata Trusts have for over a century supported some of India’s most defining institutions, including the Tata Memorial Hospital and the Indian Institute of Science,” said Noel Tata, Chairman of Tata Trusts. “This support reflects the same instinct—to build institutions of enduring value through support at an early, formative stage, when philanthropic capital can shape not just a building or a budget, but the character and ambition of an institution itself.”
Welcoming the endowment, Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at IIM Bangalore, said philanthropic support of this scale is critical for institutions aspiring to global leadership. “Transformative endowments, exemplified by the support from the Tata Trusts, are fundamental to setting institutes of national importance such as IIM Bangalore firmly on a path of global leadership. We are committed to nurturing talent at the undergraduate level and creating a pipeline of thinkers who can engage with the challenges of a data-driven world,” he said.
Siddharth Sharma, Chief Executive Officer of Tata Trusts, said the partnership reflects the organisation’s commitment to supporting ambitious educational initiatives that address future challenges. “At the Tata Trusts, we seek to nurture initiatives that are both ambitious in vision and grounded in the realities they aim to address. Supporting IIM Bangalore as it extends its tradition of academic rigour and excellence to undergraduate education reflects our belief that investing in knowledge and in the individuals who will shape India’s future is among the most meaningful things we can do,” Sharma said.
Professor U. Dinesh Kumar, Director-in-Charge of IIM Bangalore, said the undergraduate programmes have been designed to develop analytical thinking and leadership capabilities alongside technical expertise. “We have designed programmes that not only equip students with technical proficiencies but also enable young minds to ask better questions, interpret complexity and lead with evidence. The support from the Tata Trusts allows us to invest deeply in faculty, research infrastructure and campus environment, contributing to a state-of-the-art learning ecosystem focused on India’s developmental priorities while strengthening global capabilities,” he said.
The grant represents one of the most significant philanthropic commitments towards undergraduate management and interdisciplinary education in India and is expected to accelerate IIM Bangalore’s ambition of building a globally competitive undergraduate institution focused on emerging technologies, economics and evidence-based decision-making.
