U.S. President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz will be fully reopened by Friday after Washington and Tehran signed a peace agreement that ended months of conflict.
Trump also said the United States would likely not need much outside support to keep the route secure. “I don’t think we will need much help,” he said.
Iran had blocked the key shipping route after fighting broke out following US-Israeli strikes on the country in late February. The closure disrupted global energy markets and added to economic uncertainty across the region.
Iran Agrees To Never Have Nuclear Weapons
Trump said the agreement with Tehran includes a commitment from Iran to never possess nuclear weapons.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Iran has agreed to never have a Nuclear Weapon! Also, the story that the U.S. is paying Iran 300 million Dollars is Fake News, put out by the Dumocrats!!!”
US Vice President JD Vance also welcomed the agreement in a video posted on X, saying the deal would help prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon while reducing tensions in the region.
Trump Says Russia-Ukraine Deal Could Be Next
Trump said he may now focus on efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war. “Very good conversation yesterday with President Zelensky and President Putin. And I see maybe we can do something that I really do. I think they’re both open to it.”
Speaking alongside Macron, Trump suggested fresh diplomatic efforts could begin soon. “So now that this is finished, we’re going to be focusing on that! Let’s see if we can get that one done. 25,000 people a month dying, mostly soldiers. And that shouldn’t happen.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia was continuing to reject proposals for direct talks.
“We offered Putin to meet anywhere where real decisions to end the war could be made. He does not want it.”
“We discussed with the U.S. and France the possibility of a meeting with Russia around the G7, with all democratic nations represented. Putin does not want it.”
“Yesterday, we discussed with President Trump that such a meeting could be organized in the U.S. – in a format where Putin would find it much harder to refuse at least to President Trump.”
“We will see what comes of it. If Russia refuses this chance as well, additional pressure will be needed.” Zelensky made the remarks during an intervention at the EU Intergovernmental Conference.
