Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is in Qatar for a three-day official visit focused on strengthening India’s engagement with global financial institutions, sovereign partners and Qatari investors, with infrastructure financing and investment opportunities expected to feature prominently during her engagements.
Sitharaman is leading a delegation of Ministry of Finance officials during her September 27-29 visit to Doha. The visit coincides with the 11th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), scheduled for September 28.
FM Sitharaman to hold key bilateral meetings
Announcing the visit, the Finance Ministry said in a detailed statement on X, "Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman will embark on an official visit to Qatar from 27th to 29th September, 2026. The Union Finance Minister is leading the delegation comprising of Ministry of Finance officials.”
Sitharaman will participate in the AIIB annual meeting in her capacity as India’s Governor to the multilateral development bank. India is the second-largest shareholder in AIIB, giving New Delhi an important role in discussions on infrastructure financing, development priorities and the bank’s future direction.
“During the visit, FM Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman will attend the 11th Annual Meeting of Board of Governors of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) scheduled in Doha on 28th September 2026, besides other important bilateral meetings with the AIIB President and her counterparts from Jordan, Switzerland, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Nepal," added the Finance Ministry’s statement.
Focus on Qatar’s business and investment community
The Qatar visit also carries a wider investment focus. According to the Finance Ministry, Sitharaman is expected to call on the leadership of the Government of Qatar and engage with Qatari business leaders and investors.
The outreach comes as India continues to seek greater foreign capital for infrastructure and other growth-oriented sectors. Qatar, with its substantial sovereign and institutional investment capacity, remains an important Gulf partner for India’s economic and investment engagement.
AIIB platform for infrastructure financing
Sitharaman’s bilateral meetings with counterparts from Jordan, Switzerland, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Nepal are also expected to provide an opportunity to discuss economic cooperation and issues of mutual interest.
The AIIB annual meeting brings together finance ministers, policymakers and development finance stakeholders to discuss infrastructure investment and financing priorities across member economies.
For India, the discussions assume significance as the country continues to expand infrastructure spending and seek long-term capital for connectivity, sustainable development and other strategic areas of the economy.
