The Ganga Expressway, one of Uttar Pradesh’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 29 in Hardoi district, marking a major milestone in the state’s connectivity push. Developed under the Yogi Adityanath government, the 594-km corridor from Meerut to Prayagraj is expected to significantly reshape travel, trade, and economic integration across western and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The project is being positioned as a key pillar in the state’s long-term infrastructure-led growth strategy.
The expressway begins at Bijoli village in Meerut and ends near Judapur Dandu village in Prayagraj, cutting across multiple economic and agricultural zones. Approved by the state cabinet in 2020, the project has been executed in a time-bound manner as part of Uttar Pradesh’s push to expand high-speed road infrastructure. Officials have described it as a critical link that will reduce travel time, improve road safety, and strengthen east-west connectivity across the state.
12 Districts, 519 Villages to Benefit
The project directly covers 12 districts—Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj—along with 519 villages en route. This wide geographic coverage is expected to stimulate local economies, enhance rural connectivity, and improve access to markets and essential services. The expressway is also likely to deepen rural-urban economic linkages by enabling faster movement of goods and people.
Boost to logistics, investment and tourism
Uttar Pradesh currently accounts for nearly 55% of India’s expressway network, and the addition of the Ganga Expressway will raise its share to around 60%. The corridor is expected to reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and attract industrial investment by creating a high-speed freight route. Farmers are likely to benefit from quicker transport of agricultural and perishable produce, improving price realisation. The project is also expected to boost religious and cultural tourism, particularly by improving access to Prayagraj.
The Ganga Expressway, alongside other major corridors such as Purvanchal and Bundelkhand Expressways, reinforces Uttar Pradesh’s emergence as a leading expressway-driven economy in India.
