ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is set to commission two cutting-edge production lines dedicated to manufacturing advanced automotive steel products in 2025. This development, as per the company, is to help the Indian automotive steel sector by reducing reliance on imports and supporting the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

The new facilities—a Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL) and a Continuous Galvanizing and Annealing Line (CGAL)—will be located at AM/NS India’s flagship Cold Rolling Mill 2 (CRM2) complex in Hazira, Gujarat. These production lines will leverage the advanced technical expertise of the parent companies to deliver premium-quality steel, including products previously unavailable in India.

Substituting Imports with Indigenous Innovation

The new lines will produce steel with strength levels up to 1180 MPa, catering to the growing demand for high-end flat steel in India’s automotive industry. The country’s demand for such steel, currently at 7.8 million tonnes annually, is expected to grow by 6-7% per year. With these new facilities, AM/NS India will manufacture globally recognised products like Optigal® and Magnelis® indigenously, reducing dependence on imports and bolstering India’s competitiveness in the global market.
