To understand what the DRI process is, one must first understand what Powder metallurgy is. It is the scientific process involved in the production of metal powders, both ferrous and non ferrous and then creating metal components out of them.
These metal components are an integral part of our lives and exist in our household products, industrial products and most importantly in automobiles.
India is one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world and consumes about 1.35 lakh tonnes of metal powders every year to make automotive components. There aren’t enough localised plants to meet the ever growing demand of metal powders and their components so we import it from other counties. This is a longer and costlier process.

As India continues to be the world’s fastest-growing major economy, Fortune India presents its special issue on the nation’s Top 100 Billionaires. Curated in partnership with Waterfield Advisors, this year’s list reflects a slight decline in the number of dollar billionaires—from 185 to 182—even as the entry threshold for the Top 100 rose to ₹24,283 crore, up from ₹22,739 crore last year. From stalwarts like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, and the Mistry family, who continue to lead the list, to major gainers such as Sunil Mittal and Kumar Mangalam Birla, the issue goes beyond the numbers to explore the resilience, ambition, and strategic foresight that define India’s wealth creators. Read their compelling stories in the latest issue of Fortune India. On stands now.
With the help of the Make In India movement and the continued efforts of Involute Metal Powders LLP(IMPT), there is a scope for start up companies and even established industries to start producing metal powders such as sponge iron and even components in India itself.
The science of metallurgy has evolved and IMPT has made consistent progress in finding ways to make metal powder production cheaper and environmentally beneficial. One of their latest patented technologies is DRI or Direct Reduction of Iron using Magnetite iron ore. It is a method that is easy to use, causes less harm to the environment and is cheaper than traditional methods.
IMPT was founded by Mr. S Mohanty who is a researcher and inventor in the field of Powder Metallurgy. He has sent the last four decades of his life to research and discover new and more efficient ways to produce metal powders. He has numerous patents under his name such as Patent No. 154181, 168601, 171892 & 18635.
The company’s sole aim is to help revolutionise the metallurgy industry and help India become not only a sustainable metal powder producer but also a major exporter of metal powders and their components.
