U.S.-based semiconductor equipment maker Lam Research will invest ₹10,000 crore in India, according to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Ashwini Vaishnaw.

“One more milestone in our semiconductor journey: Lam Research announces major investment of over Rs 10,000 cr in India. Big vote of confidence in PM @narendramodi Ji’s semiconductor vision,” Vaishnaw wrote in a post on X.

Lam Research signed an agreement to lease and eventually purchase a land parcel owned by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), located in Whitefield, Bengaluru. Lam expects to invest more than ₹10,000 crore over the next few years in Bengaluru to meet the chip industry’s requirements.

“Surging chip demand is fuelling enormous growth in our industry. The global semiconductor market is widely forecasted to reach $1 trillion in the coming years. To put that into perspective: it took more than 50 years for the chip industry to reach $500 billion – it will take a fraction of that time for it to grow by another $500 billion. Simultaneously, technological complexity continues to accelerate, compounding the need for innovation and diversification of technical talent pools and supply chains. To support this growth, Lam continues to make infrastructure investments globally in the US, Europe and Asia,” says Rangesh Raghavan, Corporate Vice President & GM, India at Lam Research, in a LinkedIn post.

Lam Research’s association with India, and the state of Karnataka, dates back 25 years. Since 2001, Lam India has steadily increased in contributions to the company’s global operations in scope and scale, with the India Center for Engineering (ICE) in Bengaluru now a critical part of its global R&D and operations footprint. In September 2022, Lam opened its first ICE lab in Bengaluru.

In July 2024, Lam Research announced its decision to expand its supply chain to India. “Significant progress is already made with several custom parts and high precision components made by suppliers in India passing Lam’s qualification cycle. Plans are underway to scale the India supply chain operation over the next few years to support global resilience objectives,” says Raghavan.

Lam Research’s success in India is predicated on the continued availability of high-quality engineering talent in India, he says. “We are making several contributions to India’s education and skills development programs. Integrated school development projects, comprehensive scholarship programs, the Lam Research Challenge (an annual nationwide systems engineering competition), and the rollout of SemiverseTM Solutions across the country with a goal to train 60K engineers in semiconductor manufacturing processes over the next ten years, are all testament to our commitment to skills development in the semiconductor ecosystem. Lam is excited to continue our global investments in infrastructure and capability to support our customers around the world,” says Raghavan.
