Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday held talks with US Ambassador Sergio Gor on strengthening bilateral energy cooperation, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump discussed the evolving situation in West Asia.

“Very happy to receive H.E. Amb Sergio Gor in my office today. We held productive discussions on the bilateral energy cooperation between our countries and discussed ways to further strengthen our comprehensive energy relationship,” Puri said in a post on X.

Gor said the meeting focused on advancing the energy partnership, adding, “Great meeting with Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to advance the U.S.-India energy partnership. We discussed strengthening energy security and unlocking new opportunities for accelerating growth.” He added that expanding access to “reliable American energy” would help deepen economic ties while supporting long-term energy security and diversification.

Energy security takes centre stage

The discussions come at a time when tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, have heightened concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies.

The waterway is a key transit route for crude and liquefied natural gas, and any disruption has immediate implications for energy-importing nations.

India, which imports more than 80% of its crude oil requirements, is particularly exposed to such risks, with a large share of its supplies routed through the Gulf region.

Follow-up to Modi–Trump call

The meeting follows a phone conversation between Modi and Trump on Tuesday, during which the two leaders discussed the West Asia situation and underscored the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.

On Tuesday evening, after the call, Gor posted on X that it was a "very positive and productive call" between Modi and Trump.

Later, Gor said "We have some big-ticket items that will be announced over the next few days or weeks, and the relationship is on a firm footing. We will have something very interesting and exciting," according to a PTI report.

The quick follow-up engagement between Puri and Gor suggests that energy cooperation is emerging as a key area of focus in bilateral ties amid the evolving geopolitical situation.

India has been steadily working to diversify its energy basket, increasing purchases from countries such as the United States in recent years, alongside traditional suppliers in the Middle East.

With global oil markets turning volatile and freight and insurance costs rising, securing stable and diversified energy supplies has become a priority.
