Weekend Watch: From Awarapan 2 to Cocktail 2, what to watch in theatres and on OTT

As the Independence Day weekend begins, audiences have a packed slate of entertainment options across theatres and streaming platforms. While cinemas are bringing period dramas, action thrillers and family entertainers, OTT platforms are rolling out Bollywood sequels, political dramas, returning international series and reality shows.

Whether you're heading to the cinema or planning a weekend binge at home, here's a selection of this weekend's biggest releases you could consider.

OTT releases this weekend

Among the biggest digital premieres this week is Cocktail 2. Directed by Homi Adajania, the romantic comedy stars Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. The film follows long-term couple Kunal and Diya, whose relationship takes an unexpected turn when Ally, Diya's free-spirited friend, re-enters their lives during a trip to Sicily. Cocktail 2 is streaming on Netflix from August 14.

Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, directed by Manoj Tapadia, also arrives on ZEE5 on August 14. Starring Kangana Ranaut, Girija Oak and Smita Tambe, the survival thriller is inspired by the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and focuses on doctors, nurses and hospital staff at Cama and Albless Hospital who protected patients during the crisis.

Sanjay Dutt-starrer Aakhri Sawal makes its digital debut on Lionsgate Play on August 14, three months after its theatrical release. The political drama centres on scholar Vicky Hegde and his clash with his mentor, Professor Gopal Nadkarni, after his thesis is rejected.

Fans of action series can catch Reacher Season 4, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on August 12. Alan Ritchson returns as Jack Reacher, who is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy following an unexpected encounter on a subway. The season begins with three episodes, followed by weekly releases.

Meanwhile, The Traitors Season 2, hosted by Karan Johar, arrived on Prime Video on August 13. The reality competition brings 21 celebrity contestants together for a game of alliances, deception and strategic eliminations.

Other notable releases this week include Netflix’s coming-of-age drama Don’t Say Good Luck, which begins streaming on August 14, and South African crime series Umthetho, also available on Netflix from August 14. Spanish-language crime drama Women in Blue Season 2 premiered on Apple TV+ on August 12, while 108 Base Hospital Uri is set to premiere on JioHotstar on August 15.

In theatres this weekend

Leading this week's theatrical releases is Awarapan 2, with Emraan Hashmi returning as Shivam nearly two decades after the original film. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the romantic action drama follows Shivam as he gets caught between his past, his powerful employer and a woman he decides to help escape her troubled life. The film releases in cinemas on August 14.

Also hitting theatres is Batwara 1947, Rajkumar Santoshi's period drama set against the backdrop of Partition. The film stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol, and follows characters dealing with displacement, identity and the loss of their homes amid growing communal tensions.

For Hollywood audiences, The End of Oak Street offers a mystery thriller with a high-concept premise. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film follows the Platt family after a mysterious cosmic event suddenly separates their suburban neighbourhood from the outside world and transports it to an unknown location. Starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, the film hits theatres on August 14.
