Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the Ashok Nagar – Sahibabad stretch of the Delhi-Meerut regional rapid transport system (RRTS) on Sunday. Apart from flagging off the section, prime minister is also scheduled to inaugurate major urban development projects in Delhi today, ahead of the announcement of dates for Delhi assembly elections next week.

RRTS is a rail based regional rapid transport system, which aims to provide dedicated, high speed, high-capacity corridor in national capital region. It differs from metro as it has been designed for high-speed travel at 180 km/hr. Currently, RRTS is operational between Sahibabad and Meerut South. Once complete, the entire corridor costing ₹30,274 crore will provide seamless high speed connectivity between Delhi’s Jangpura and Meerut (82 km).

The RRTS project, rechristened as Namo Bharat, will have future corridors between Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar, (198 kms), and Delhi-Panipat (103 kms), among others. The projects are being funded through a collaboration between the central government, concerned state government and multilateral agencies. For the Delhi-Meerut section, ADB has provided assistance of $1 billion while NDB and AIIB have provided $500 million each.

The project incorporates green building practices, with the zero-discharge concept, solar energy generation, and rainwater harvesting systems.

The GPRA Type-II Quarters at Sarojini Nagar includes 28 towers that house over 2,500 residential units, offering modern amenities and efficient use of space. The project’s design incorporates rainwater harvesting systems, sewage and water treatment plants, and solar-powered waste compactors encouraging eco-conscious living.
