Shares of Adani Green Energy (AGEL) surged nearly 4% in intraday trade on Wednesday after the company announced that it had crossed 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational renewable energy capacity. With this, the Adani Group company became the first renewable energy company in India to achieve the milestone predominantly through greenfield project development.

Cheering the news, Adani Green Energy shares climbed as much as 3.6% to ₹1,545.75 on the BSE, taking its market capitalisation to ₹2.52 lakh crore. The renewable energy stock has more than doubled from its 52-week low of ₹767, touched on January 23, 2026, and inched closer to its 52-week high of ₹1,562.25 achieved on June 23, 2026.

In an exchange filing on Wednesday, Adani Green said it has surpassed 20 GW of operational renewable energy capacity, generating over 52 billion units of clean electricity annually.

"The output represents nearly 3% of India's electricity consumption, enough to power New York City for a year, or almost all of Mumbai and New Delhi combined," the release noted.

The milestone marks a significant achievement for AGEL, which commissioned its first renewable energy project at Kamuthi in Tamil Nadu in 2016. Within a decade, the company has emerged as India's largest renewable energy developer, building one of the country's largest clean energy portfolios.

Commands 14% of India's utility-scale solar capacity

With the latest addition, AGEL now accounts for nearly 14% of India's utility-scale solar installations and around 12% of the country's combined utility-scale solar and wind capacity, underscoring its dominant position in the renewable energy sector.

The operational milestone comes after AGEL added 5,051 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity during FY26, the highest annual renewable capacity addition by any company outside China. The pace of capacity expansion has reinforced investor confidence in the company's execution capabilities as India accelerates its clean energy transition.

Sagar Adani, Executive Director of Adani Green Energy, said crossing the 20 GW mark demonstrates what disciplined execution and a long-term vision can achieve.

"Today, AGEL, along with our efficient team and longstanding partners, delivers renewable electricity equivalent to almost the annual power requirement of Mumbai and New Delhi combined, reinforcing the country's energy security while accelerating its clean energy transition," he said.

Targets 50 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030

Apart from expanding generation capacity, AGEL is also strengthening its energy storage capabilities to support round-the-clock renewable power. The company has already commissioned 3.55 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which it describes as the world's largest deployment outside China and among the fastest executed globally.

Battery storage is increasingly becoming a critical component of renewable energy infrastructure as it enables grid stability and addresses the intermittent nature of solar and wind power. AGEL plans to add another 10 GWh of battery storage capacity during FY27 and expand its battery portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years.

The company said these investments will support its long-term target of achieving 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

A key driver of this expansion is the company's massive renewable energy project at Khavda in Gujarat's Kutch district. Spread across 538 square kilometres, the project is being developed as the world's largest renewable energy plant, with a planned capacity of 30 GW. AGEL has already commissioned 9.5 GW of solar capacity at the site, representing more than 30% of the project's planned capacity.

The announcement follows Sagar Adani's address at the inaugural Adani Green Energy Dialogue held during London Climate Action Week, where he highlighted the growing importance of combining renewable energy with large-scale battery storage to improve energy security, affordability, and grid reliability.
