Bank of Maharashtra was established in 1934 when the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce felt the need for a separate bank for the state of Maharashtra. Soon after, it was officially registered in 1935 and began operations from 1936. It remained under private ownership till 1969, when it was nationalised with 13 other banks. The bank provides personal, agriculture, corporate, and NRI banking with approximately 5000 branches. Its products include credit and debit cards, mutual funds, government savings and investment schemes, loans, and insurance, among others. The Confederation of Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises awarded Bank of Maharashtra the Best Bank title for promoting government schemes.
